Lajdziak set to retire from Saturn after 23 years

10/27/2009, 7:11 PM

By Mark Kleis

Saturn General manager Jill Lajdziak is set to retire from General Motors at the end of this year after twenty-nine years in the GM family. GM says that Lajdziak will exercise some vacation time before her retirement takes effect at the end of the year.

Lajdziak spent her entire life surrounded by the automotive industry; Lajdziak’s father owned a Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealership when she was a child. Lajdziak has memories as young as three years old helping her father wash cars at the dealership.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor of arts degree in business marketing and management Lajdziak went to Proctor and Gamble looking for a possible career. What Lajdziak found instead was what she described as a break for her career when the interviewer asked, “Where would you like to be in five years?”

Lajdiziak said, “I want to be working for GM.” Lajdziak went on to start a career at GM in 1980 as a district sales manager for Chevrolet.

By 1986, Lajdziak had been promoted to be the manager of retailer selection with Saturn. Lajdziak went on to spend 23 years at the executive level with Saturn before becoming General Manager in 1999.

Does anyone really care about another rich exec pulling the ripcord of their golden parachute as the company they were charged with running goes down the drain?

I think she should take some time to mull this over.

As a district sales manager she was polishing a lot of knobs (FYI “polishing” was not meant derogatory to Polish audience, ah what the f*ck it was :) )

I figure you’d be the expert, Borat, to ask, “How in the hell do you pronounce that consonant-laden name?” I can’t find the Duke basketball coach’s number, or I’d ask him.

When the mucketymucks at GM were considering promoting her, she thought they asked, “Uranus or Saturn?” to which she immediately replied, “Saturn!” She might still have a job today, had she understood the question…

How nice she is now retiring since saturn had its last nail put in its coffin. I wonder how long she “mulled” over that decision.

Failed car company (GM); failed car division (Saturn); failed model lineup (all of Saturn); failed management (Jill Lajdziak) = lucrative retirement (via taxpayers). Only in America.

Hasn’t she ever heard of ‘going down with the ship’? I mean Saturn will be dead, what, 3 months after this?

Maybe the 90% pay cuts are real, and take effect January 1. Vacation now, retirement immediately thereafter, and she won’t have to work for pennies on the dollar. Nice timing, Jill. We taxpayers will keep working, waiting quietly for GM to pay us back. I just know we’ll get some huge tax breaks afforded by the repaid loans. Or maybe our government will simply write a check to each of us (with interest, of course).

A4 I think Penske will put up a fight market wise but I think he’s in for a bad surprise if he had no idea what he was getting himself into me thinks. And I think he does’nt know what he is doing! He should of stayed in the Racing and Rent a Truck business where he belongs!

Where will she go on vacation? Who will she be staying with? How will she get there? Who’s her travel agent? These are important questions that LLN should have addressed.

She should be forced to drive an Ion sedan for the rest of her life. Anyone involved in greenlighting that stylistic mess should be.
