Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder [Updated with live images]

11/20/2008, 1:14 AM

By Nick Aziz

When Lamborghini unleashed its Gallardo LP560—4 coupe earlier this year, we knew it was only a matter of time until the convertible Spyder variant would arrive. That moment finally came today with the unveiling of the LP560—4 Spyder at the Los Angeles auto show.

It’s not coincidence Lamborghini chose the LA show to launch this exotic drop-top. The United States is the Italian automaker’s biggest market, and South California is the epicenter. In fact, So Cal accounts for 30 percent of all Lambo sales.

“The LP 560-4 is the best example of the Gallardo to date and will be a great contribution to Lamborghini’s future success,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “The entirely new LP 560-4 Spyder adds another dimension to the Gallardo’s lineage with extreme design language and class-leading performance.”

If the name LP560-4 seems like a bit of a mouthful, allow us to explain. The 560 portion of the name reflects its horsepower, while the “4″ designation indicates all-wheel-drive. The “4″ was added to the name in anticipation of the forthcoming rear-wheel-drive variant, which will likely end in “2.”

The Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder offers a new 5.2-liter engine with 40 additional horsepower than its predecessor — enabling the car to sprint from zero to 62 mph in only four seconds.

A top speed of 201 mph is possible, but you don’t need to experience Autobahn speeds to appreciate the car’s improvements. The car’s agility is said to be improved, and a new, lighter transmission allows increased shift times by 40 percent (Corsa Mode). Combined with an all-new chassis, better suspension, and Lamborghini’s permanent all-wheel drive system, prospective owners are in for a treat.

Despite increased performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 18 percent.

Life is all about taking risks. I’m going to take a bold risk here, and predict that most of the posters on the LLN forum will not be purchasing a Lamborghini Gallardo.

Woah, my new favorite roadster.
Very stunning indeed.
i’ll have mine in grey with a red leather interior.

Also, in the live pics, the Spyder has those awesome black rims from the old Gallardo, but the official pics show those ugly multi-piece BBS inspired rims.
