As seems to be the case every auto show season, yet another car has become a victim of a little thing we call fire. This time, it involves a Lamborghini Gallardo that caught fire under most unusual circumstances at the Portland International Auto Show earlier this week.
The car in question was not a factory car compliments of Lamborghini itself, but rather a customer’s Gallardo that was brought in for display at the show. The problem is, the driver didn’t realize that the fire marshal wouldn’t allow the vehicle in with more than a quarter tank of fuel, which it had, and as Motor Authority points out, that is where the trouble began.
Rather than finding a way to siphon the fuel or take it for one more fun and enthusiastic spin, the display staff decided to sit and redline the vehicle while in neutral in an attempt to burn off the excess fuel. Amazingly, the same person who came up with that game plan decided things were taking too long and then decided to prop the gas pedal in the maximum acceleration position with a piece of wood and walk away.
Yes, we’re serious.
After several minutes, things got a bit hot and as the pictures indicate, a fire broke out in the engine bay of the Gallardo. The embarrassing ordeal went to pure panic mode to get the fire extinguished and the car was quickly rushed away from the scene.
Let’s hope the Portland International Auto Show didn’t cheap out on their insurance.
