Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster

11/30/2006, 2:02 AM

By admin

Lamborghini today presented the Murcielago LP640 Roadster at the Los Angeles auto show. The car is a convertible version of the powerful LP640 variant, which was first introduced in coupe form in February.

The car is powered by a 6.5-litre V12, longitudinally mounted behind the driver. The engine’s increased displacement means output jumps to 631 hp at 8,000 rpm. As with the coupe, the carbon fiber exterior has been enhanced with sharper lines, new 18-inch rims, and 13.5 inch-wide tires. The interior has also been revised for increased comfort. I hope they fixed the collapsible roof into a fully automatic one because the last generation soft top was a nightmare to put up. Can’t have the Gallardo with a fully automatic top while the top of the line gets an ancient arrangement.

Nice. I’m with Carnut4ever, should have a fully automatic roof instead of that other crappy roof the old one had.

But the automatic roof is too heavy?

Im afraid the design is wearing a little old with me, just like the Countach and Diablo eventually did. They were all truly AMAZING designs when launched and for many years thereafter but at some point, I think they need to refresh their designs a little more often OR add in a 3rd or 4th model to the mix so that we are not constantly stuck with a singular and therefore static image of a Lambo.

My personal favorite is the 2001 Diablo 6.0 GT as that had the sickest Carbon Fiber interior and exterior trim ever! I live in a small town now but there’s 1 token Rich Guy and he drives not only a Ford GT but I saw him with a new Murcielago Roadster in red the other day – must have had some racing exhaust installed cuz that thing sounded MEAN and definitely not stock…I;m not saying the Murci’s day is over yet but simply that I see it on the horizon…

Carnut4ever and Matt, I can understand why you would want a auto roof, but look at the car, you would have to hack the thing up to fit all the extra mechanical parts. I doesn’t look like it could fit and look like it does now. Plus be a droptop they had to add additional bracing to the chassis, so adding even more weight to make it an auto top would be stupid. Just don’t get caught in the rain.

This car is perfect looking, and basically perfect performing as well. Asher: I think it’s dumb to criticize this design as getting “too old” when its just now been refreshed quite a bit, this isn’t the Murcielago that was around for 3 years straight, its totally refreshed, and it looks it too, combine that with a more powerful new engine, and you’ve got nothing to complain about. I do wish the top would be more usable however, but really with weight issues its hard to find an ample solution

“its totally refreshed, and it looks it too”

—perhaps to your eyes, but not to mine, simply put. Its a classic Lambo Wedge design and I can barely tell it apart from a non-640. What I said was that IF they had some additional models, I would not be so bored looking at it all the time.

Basically, when you’ve seen 1 Murci, you’ve seen them all and even with rims and trim bits etc, they all pretty much look the exact same. Yes, they look great – I never said they didn’t – BUT when you stare at the same hot supermodel over and over again, and there are no fresh supermodels to replace her, you get bored no matter how objectively hot she is. And thus, why the Porn industry thrives like no other!!

i agree with asher..but i still think it looks good….

but a lamborghini isnt jst on looks its got a lot with the sound and drive…and id rather see them release a Murcie 1.5 than a repeat of the LM002 (nothing against the lambo-hummer i like it, itz jst the shouldnt have models to have models)…let them perfect the lamborghini which they are near close to…and in 3 years we can have a new model…

but why hasnt anyone complained about the fact that everyone could have seen this coming….

never b4 has photoshop been so accurate

As far as the top is considered, it is a moot point if you understand who actually BUYS this cars versus who actually DREAMS about owning it. It needs no top as its just another rich guy toy for sunny days and the owner likely has 5 other nice rides to choose from in his/her garage that are better suited for a potentially rainy day like a Bentley.

2 years ago, this guy at my office drove a Diablo Roadster and the Top NEVER was on ever – and he didnt care – even with bad weather! The guy was so loaded, he took complete **** care of his cars and when I tell you the interior condition looked worse than my brother’s 89 trashed Taurus SHO, Im not joking.

The REAL shame about cars like these is that often times, they are owned and driven by those with deep pockets and big egos, and who could never appreciate them in the way you or I could…

At least Lamborghini could have borrowed the clever roof design of the Ferrari Superamerica which had a simple glass roof that swings 180 degrees which is perfect for the vast rear end of the Murcielago.

But Asher if you’re really that tired of looking at the Murcielago, there are plenty of, in your words, other hot models to look at , they come in the form of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Bugatti, Lotus, etc, etc etc. I however can stare at a Murcielago all day and I find more and more that I respect about its design, the shapes used, the creases, angles, and lines are brilliantly conveived. Just look at the shapes used in this car, its incredible, I dont know that’s just me, but for one of my studio art classes I had to use inspiration from an artist, and the artist I chose was Luc Donckerwolke, the designer of the Murcielago, and theres lots of brilliance to be found in its design

I agree Lambo – I was just saying I wish Luc would pen some additional designs so I wouldnt have to look for “hot models” from “other towns”…

…and you know its a truly GREAT design when you can stare at it indefinitely and keep discovering new lines and things you like about it – I always loved the F50 from the pictures but when I saw it for the first time in person many years ago when Penske’s personal one was parked in his AZ Ferrari dealership, I was blown away by the proportions and poured over every line for hours. Cars like that are why people glamorize their garages – non-enthusiasts dont get it – but if that car was mine, my garage would be the most occupied room of my house!

Yeah the F50 is one of my very favorite designs, and while Luc did pen the Gallardo he unfortunately left head of Lamborghini design and I believe is now head of Seat design

And Asher I also agree with you on wishing Luc penned a few more designs, as happy as I am with the perfection that is the Murcielago, I really wish I could see what else he might have thought up for Lamborghini other than the Gallardo, which is itself an amazing looking car as well
