Lamborghini developing Espada successor with 2+2 layout

The company is considering a high-performance plug-in hybrid or an all-electric powertrain.

Lamborghini is developing a new Grand Tourer with a spacious interior and seating for at least four people.

Responding to an Automotive News question about a 2+2 successor to the Espada (pictured) of the 1960s, Lamborghini chief executive Stefano Domenicali admitted that such a model is on the brand's long-term product roadmap.

"We are working hard to combine high performance with interior space and driving comfort in a package that, designwise, should be striking as well as highly efficient in terms of aerodynamics," he said.

An all-electric powertrain or plug-in hybrid system are under consideration for the car's powertrain, though a final decision has not been made.

"This is the most difficult decision we have to take at Lamborghini and, luckily, we still have time to ponder all the available options," Domenicali added. "As of today, we do not hear that Lamborghini customers are asking for a battery-powered model, but maybe in seven to nine years they will be -- and we should be ready."

The Espada's spiritual successor is not expected to be ready until 2025-2027 at the earliest.
