Land dispute could delay production of Tata Nano

The $2,500 Tata Nano is supposed to start production later this year, but a land dispute could delay the car’s production, a new report finds. India’s Supreme Court requested a reply from Tata Motors and the West Bengal government as to why ‘fertile multi-crop agricultural land’ was being used for the Nano’s production plant.

The Calcutta High Court allowed Tata and the West Bengal government to acquire the land, but a new petition has been filed requesting the immediate halt of the project. The petition claims the land use goes against the Land Acquisition Act of 1894, according to the Times of India.

The facility — which is located in Singur, India — is slated to begin production of the world’s cheapest car in October. However, a hearing has been set for July, meaning the Nano project could be delayed, giving other automakers time to catch up with Tata’s microcar.

AD. So it was a law passed during the British Raj period. And Tata can’t smack talk British laws or anything British now that they have Jag and LR :)

NOW you cant’ build where something will grow.
India will NEVER become more than a 3rd world country at this rate.

Apparently this is none of Tata’s fault. Tata got caught in the crossfire between the ruling party and the opposition.

Sad! Finally we got an affordable car and now its stuck in land dispute!

Getreal, at least they have democracy. Communist China would not have such problems: you don’t like what chairman does? Here is your bullet and kidneys goes to the highest bidder. In addition, most of our software is happily defected their.

Tata, cut your losses and buy another piece of land somewhere else. I would assume too much money is at stake to bother getting tied up in an Indian kangaroo court where nothing will progress unless the billionaire greases everyone’s palms.
