Land Rover is said to be readying a larger version of its Range Rover Evoque SUV. The new model – which is slated to ride on an extended version of the Evoque’s platform – will help Land Rover bridge the gap between the current Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.
In order to compete with vehicle like the BMW X5 and Audi Q7, Land Rover will extended the overall length of the Evoque for the so-called Evoque XL. About half of that length will be added to the wheel base while the rest will provide a bigger cargo area. A third-row is expected to be at least optional, if not standard.
Although the current Evoque is powered by a 240 horsepower 2.0L, Inside Line suggests the Evoque XL could switch to a new 1.8L turbo four being developed by Jaguar Land Rover. However, that powertrain could leave something to be desired as it will reportedly top out at 170 horsepower.
A hybrid powertrain is also a possibility, but that model would trail behind the conventionally powered model by a couple of years.
In terms of luxury, Land Rover will be careful not to overlap the Evoque XL with existing Range Rover products. Both the next-generation Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are expected to move up-scale to make room for the Evoque XL.
No word on when we might see the Evoque XL, but the more spacious SUV will be built alongside the regular Evoque in the UK.
