Land Rover ’s sporty LRX concept has been spotted on the roads, hinting it’s closer to production. While the concept version, seen first at Detroit in January and more recently at Geneva, sported just two doors, the production SUV has four door handles. That’s not to say a two-door will not be part of the line-up, but now we know there is a possibility both will see production.
The LRX, yet unnamed, is based on the Freelander, so Freelander Sport may be a possibility and should hit showrooms sometime in 2010. It is expected to be more of a crossover, with a bias towards on-road agility rather than hard-core off-roading, though a smart all-wheel drive system with settings for varying conditions is expected to be integrated.
Other differences from the concept car include added height for more interior space, and a toned-down interior based on the Freelander’s, though it is expected to move upscale with high-quality plastics and leather, wood, carbon fibre and aluminum.
The LRX is set to compete with the upcoming Audi Q5 and BMW X1, and will slot in above the Freelander in Land Rover ’s range, as per Auto Express.
A stop-start system and advanced hybrid system utilizing capacitors instead of batteries should make their Land Rover debut in the production version of the LRX.
