Land Rover may be moving ahead with a production version of its LRX show car, but the British marque has suspended plans for a seven-passenger version of its LR2 SUV. Word of Land Rover’s seven-passenger LR2 plans broke just over a year ago.
The seven-seater was being developed under the codename L486, but the entire program has been put on the back burner as Land Rover focuses on other projects, such as the aforementioned LRX small crossover utility vehicle.
Essentially a long-wheelbase version of the current LR2, the new model was expected to bow as early as next year. It remains unclear if the project will ever get back on track, but Land Rover hasn’t officially cancelled the program.
The suspension of the project throws Land Rover’s naming scheme into a bit of a limbo. Land Rover recently changed the name of the Discovery to the LR4 in order to clear the way for the seven-passenger SUV to be named the LR3. But with the seven-seat version of the LR2 now on hold, it remains to be seen if the LR2 will still make the transition to LR3.
