If GM would have lower the price, redesigned the body, and kept the under structure with it's performance the car might have gone somewhere. It just seems stupid drop everything when all you need is new sheet metal.

It is sad to see the GTO exit the scene. As a classic car lover it is very easy to perhaps over-remember the "good-old-days" but they do bring pleasure to us older guys.

#19, those "Daewoo" engines you refer to are Opel engines, built by Holden in Melbourne. Call them what you will, but they are bullet proof. The gearboxes are a bit wonky though (the ones that GM-Daewoo use) as they are slighly modified Getrag gearboxes, such as the F16 and F20 (compatible with the 6 speed F28 found in some Vauxhalls and Opels).

There is a 2004 GTO for sale not far from me with only 4,700 miles. They are asking 22,900 for it and I bet they would take 20,000 or a litte less.

Talk about a performance bargin.

although the pontiac gto has a great price and pretty good performance it still should be able to compete with the corvette a little more

Tino, no doubt. Or maybe Renault or Nissan as it may be :O
It is quite possible GM negotiates a deal where they get to remarket the LeCar and NX cars powered by their Daiwoo engines. ;)

"I didnt know you could still get the Cadillac Catera?" Now that's funny.

It was a great Idea with poor execution, like most of GM's products... Sad really. Probably the best car from GM as far as fit and finish go. but like it was said earlier, if they had labeled it Monte Carlo it would have owned.

At the price point, I would take the GTO over the Mustang.

I saw and heard one the other day. Wow. It must have had the LS1 engine in it or something (don't hate on me, I am not up on the GTO engine offereings) because it was a deep and throaty blast coming from the exhaust.

Nice car, but I guess it was not enough for the masses. Seems people like to complain that things are too bland or too conservative, and they never would buy either one anyway.

Every time I saw one of these...and it was few and far between I was reminded how it was a pretty good looking ride. Pontiac needs to put out a bad ass new throwback TransAm similar to early 70s single headlight styling with the modern day equivelant of the HO or S, D.
I just have never liked the styling of the newer TAs. Throwback is worthwile here. Make if fast, nimble and growly. Put the bird back on the hood too. :)

I liked the GTO but it was too big and clumsy for driving schools or track days. If the General could come up with something that has good proportions (by that I mean not having those ridiculously long front and rear overhangs like the last F-bodies), a decent chassis, the LS2 engine mated to a 6 speed and they price it to compete with the Mustang, I would be the first one there to sign up for one.

Was a great Australian car for the Money. Its fast, but its handling in turns was not the best. Very fun to drive if you like the rear end breaking free and going into powerslides

its a shame, because the current GTO was a great platform, great suspension, great powertrain, great interior, amazing performance for the price.... and simply a dud for the streched gen-1 hyundai accent looks outside.

I love the Goat, but you cannot make your entire lineup throwbacks. I was one of those people, yesterday in fact, who did not have a problem with the retro thing. Today, I say it is starting to get out of control.
