NEW FUTURE MARKET
  • Leaked: Chrysler’s 2011 production start schedule

By Mark Kleis - Posted March 4th 2010

Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram production start dates have found their way onto the Internet far ahead of their planned releases. Among the tidbits of information leaked are confirmations of name changes, and contradictions to past information concerning the order of new model releases.

Most of the “leaks” that recently worked their way onto the internet before the start of the Geneva Motor Show were likely more akin to backdoor releases than actual leaks. But when it comes to production schedules, that type of information is generally kept fairly tight to the chest in order to avoid potentially damaging sales numbers for current models.

Luckily for those on the fence who are considering either taking advantage of the deep discounts currently offered by Chrysler or waiting for new products, Accelerate Mpls has done the dirty work and exposed the complete production start list that was hiding in plain site on Allpar. The list and the commentary following it give insight into the coming changes to the Chrysler lineup – and even gives hints towards some name changes to existing Chrysler products.

First up for production will be the 2010 Viper – set to resume production in just a few weeks on March 29, 2010. The Viper started a production halt in July, and will return two years earlier than previously indicated. Some reports suggested that the world would be without a Dodge Viper until the Ferrari influenced Viper returned in 2012, but according to this schedule, the Dodge will live on before its transformation.

Next up will be the chassis cab Ram pickups on April 5, which will be 2011 model year vehicles along with every other model on the list – save for the Viper. According to the source that provided the information, “Dodge is currently working on a plan that would make the Ram 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs available to all Ram dealers.” This shift would help to increase fleet sales and may help Chrysler to inflates sales numbers beyond barely neutral.

After the chassis cab trucks will come the 2011 Grand Cherokee – beginning production on May 10. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be an all-new model and will feature the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. Two months after Jeep launches a crucial new SUV, Ram will start production of the 1500 and 2500 models on July 5 at one plant, and then July 26 for the second plant.

Later in July, the 26th to be exact, Chrysler is looking to have a busy day when they begin production for the 2011 Caliber, Dakota, Liberty and Nitro. Although most of those models are expected to essentially just be carried over from 2010, there are rumors suggesting the 2011 Dakota could possibly begin its new life as a unibody pickup. Earlier reports suggested the transition would take place in 2011, which is still possible, but a 2010 introduction isn’t completely out of the question.

Another model surrounded by speculation is the 2011 Jeep Wrangler on August 16th. The Wrangler has obviously remained mostly unchanged during its storied history, but some suggestions place a new Pentastar V6 – which we find to be very likely – and the addition of minor aerodynamic tweaks as well as technological upgrades in order to keep the Wrangler modern. Another possibility is that the Wrangler will remain virtually unchanged, aside from its new more powerful and more efficient V6.

The Jeep Patriot is set to enter production on October 4. The Patriot, along with the PT Cruiser, Dodge Nitro, Jeep Compass and Chrysler Sebring, is set to go away in 2012 – so don’t expect big changes.

One interesting production date to note is November 8, where a “Dodge CUV” is set to begin production. The CUV is believed to either be a Durango replacement, or potentially the return of a Magnum model. Allpar suggests that the “Dodge CUV” may likely be a stretched and tweaked Grand Cherokee with an upward sloping roofline, as opposed to the downward sloping Cherokee’s roofline.

On November 16, production will begin for the Journey and Ram 1500 hybrid. The Journey is due for a refresh inside and out, and expect a new engine as well. Just two days later in November, refreshed versions of the Avenger and Sebring are set to begin production on the 18th, but there is a possibility that the Sebring will be known as the 200C. Just days later, the minivans will begin production on the 22nd. A week after Chrysler begins producing its 2011 minivans, it will start production on the key new 2011 Charger – as well as the Challenger and 300.

The 2011 Charger will be a drastic departure from current styling, expected to bring classic lines like that of the 1968 models back to Dodge showrooms. The 300C will get some tweaks to the body lines and improvements to aerodynamics, but will fall short of a totally fresh design. The Challenger is expected to get a major overhaul, and should receive a beefed up new 6.4-liter Hemi V8.

Closing out the production dates for 2010 will be the Jeep Compass and Fiat 500 – both set for December 13 start dates. The Fiat 500 will mark the first Fiat-badged vehicle to enter the U.S. sales mix as a result of the Fiat-Chrysler merger.

I do care just a tad, but I don’t have to comment if I do. I’ll just read the info, read the comments. Agree to some, disagree to other. At times, I would even post something that is barely original, and move on. There. My life on leftlanenews.

Ooooooooo. WHat car does that cool looking gauge cluster belong to?? I hope Fiat helps this hopeless company once and for all. Hopefully Chrysler will reach a point where they won’t need to hold anyones hand anymore.

So next years 300 is going to be yet another ‘refresh’ and not a much-needed new vehicle? No pun intended here, but Jesus Chrysler!

      71fiveanddime183 days ago

@ MurcieMe: its too soon for chrysler to release a brand new 300. fiat hasnt had its hands on the company long enough to oversee new development. 2012 is the logical time to release new models and generation updates, as there will have been sufficient time to integrate fiat and chrysler engineering/design schemes. oh, and management too.

Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to have 2011 models like the Charger be in showrooms earlier? If November production means December or January shipping, that seems a bit late.

A lot of this is pure speculation.

Not going to believe anything until I see it.

Still going to produce 2010 Vipers? Are these even moving on dealer lots?

Too soon??? the 300 and charger have been out 5 years already!!!! They(Chrysler) are no BMW or Benz to redesign a car every 5-8 years! Only they can pull that off because its a different kind of buyer for those cars. A new 300 should of been out!, They havent’t even had a face lift yet! They only changed the rear lighting style for I dont know how many times! and the Charger is god awful! The only good car they have is the Challenger, and I mean out of all Chrysler Jeep and Dodge! The thing is if GM had the new cars planned out before they filed bankruptcy(ex:CTS, Equinox, Malibu, LaCrosse), then Chrysler should of had new models planned, which they didnt, Nobody needs a Electric version of a Minivan or whatever the hell that had coming out! They should of had new 300, Chargers, Nitros, Compass, Avengers, Sebrings, etc. out way before hand. When you design a car it generally takes 3-8 years to make the next upcoming model, thats why it takes so long for new models to come out in that period of 3-8 years, they should be already working on the next generation of that model. But 5 years man? come on thats more than enough time to make a new car! Especially if Dodge and Chrysler have separate CEO and such, I think they do……..

wyVern, I care. I read this article with great interest. I have purchased nothing but Chrysler products for 12 years so I care very much what their plans are. Most of what I read here sounds pretty good with a few exceptions. Seems like Chrysler is on its way back and cleaning up the mess caused by Daimler and Cerberus. One thing though Chrysler…..bring back the Pacifica!! Chrysler needs a luxury crossover for crying out loud!

      orangecones183 days ago

i couldn’t care less for most of that stuff, except for the updated Wrangler (not b/c I want one, but because I think that car is generally important) and the 500 (because I would consider one for purchase in late summer / early fall of this year). My only concern is that I heard the first batch of 500s will be brought over across the pond, and then we will see the Mexico-assembled models. I guess they changed their minds on that one.

If this story is true, which I don’t know if it is, then kudos to Fiat’s team. What they will do to Chrysler is faster than I thought possible. Remember how long it takes to develop a cars from scratch – years if not an entire decade – so if they can make a dent in Chrysler’s lineup in just 2 years that’s impressive.

it would be hard to change the 300 much while still keeping it a recognizable 300, same with the wrangler

      MurcieMe183 days ago

I agree with you Genisis, the new 300 should be well along in development.

And Hey, What happened to those new model illustrations from last year? That didn’t just look like a ‘refresh’ they’re mentioning here. That looks like an entirely new car to me, with all new body panels throughout and a totally new, vastly different, much improved interior. WHERE IS THAT CAR Chrysler?

Hey i got an idea, how about they dismantle the unions, and hire some of the thousands of people looking for a good job with full benefits that may not pay $75 an hour, but maybe $40-50 like toyota, nissan, honda, etc in the US. That way they could invest more into their product lines and pay back our tax money!!

Lots of new products that based on sales figures today, no one wants. Nice job, Chrysler.

      jimboy183 days ago

One of the reasons there has been such a long lead on the 300/Charger/Challenger refresh is that both Fiat and Chrysler need to engineer out the old Mercedes components foisted on them by Daimler. Already, the germans are slowing delivery of parts to Chrysler, so they need to be able to say ‘Ciao’ to the gang in Stuttgart. Can’t be done fast enough IMHO, nobody wants be beholden to those pr***’s. The vehicles will be SUBSTANTIALLY re-engineered to do away with royalty payments to Daimler. This takes time and money, and Chrysler has been short of both lately. I think they are doing an excellent job with very limited resources. BTW, maybe some of you people who crap on Chrysler should drive a few before you burden us with your unwanted, uninformed opinions, they actually make some excellent vehicles. I’ve owned many and been happy with virtually all of them.

      NRG183 days ago

@howsmydriving. I hope the he ! ! it does. I can’t wait to see it. I knew this would be coming for Challenger. I also can’t wait to see the Charger lines. My all time favorite car is the ’68 Charger. It will also be nice to see the Pentastar V6 in the Wrangler with some styling tweeks. It needs an update.

We have all been waiting for this and I think the new 2012MY cars that will be coming out will even further help Chrysler. This has been a long time coming.

@Genesis. I couldn’t agree more. I’m a MOPAR fan and it has been very frustrating to see how far behind Chrysler is. Of course a lot of that had to do with CEREBUS too. You can’t balme Chrysler too much.

    28. photo
      Arthur Dunning182 days ago

@Genesis101: The problem is that Cerberus invested little or no money into new Chrysler products. The closest they’ve come is investing money in improvements to the Dodge Journey. They didn’t make any improvements to make the Sebring/Avenger more competitive. Fiat is only doing the best with what they have.

As far as the 300 goes, the best Fiat and Chrysler can do is develop a new platform for it and upgrade its sheetmetal.

    29. photo
      JakeK66182 days ago

      @Everyone -

You can’t blame Cerebus or Fiat AT ALL on this. The poor planning was done ENTIRELY by Daimler and Dr. Z’s geniusness. Cerebus was given very little to develop on and when they finally did something, the market collapsed. Fiat has done so far nothing – but that’s because they have nothing. So they are so far very ahead of things. If they can pull all of this off, as I said before, it’s a miracle. 2 years is not enough time to do anything drastic in the automotive industry.

      worst 3182 days ago

thought that the 6.4L was supposed to make it in the the Ram first.

hopefully they get every thing done right, I am a fan of dodge and Chrysler and I hope they can get out of the hole they are in. it is going to take more then just producing competitive cars they are going to need to make products that are a significantly better then the competition to get out.

hope they change up the challenger to be more a bit smaller (still larger then the other 2 more every day friendly) and lighter to be more competitive with the other pony a cars, leave the real muscle car to the charger (even if it has 4 doors).

I see them only having to directions for them to go, becoming very successful and profitable for there size or failing completely not much middle ground for them.

    31. photo
      Arthur Dunning182 days ago

@JakeK66: It’s not entirely correct to say Fiat has done nothing. They invested $550 million in the Toluca plant in Mexico to build the Fiat 500, along with investing $179 million in Chrysler’s GEMA operation in Dundee, Michigan, to make the car’s engine.

Fiat and Chrysler are also working together on a new platform to underpin the next Chrysler 300C that is due later this year, along with plans to use Alfa-Romeo’s Guilietta platform on their first joint model.

They ARE doing something, but it just won’t be quick as some people may wish.

what engine from fiat would have a red line starting at around 5250rpm’s, that is the reline ? that usually large displacement v8 territory, or an old v6, wonder what if from, if it from any possibly car as it looks cgi.

I didn’t see anything in this article that says they aren’t sticking with the original plan to import 500′s first, then build in Mexico. Why are you people upset?

the Tachometer in the picture for the article has a red line or what looks to me starts at 5250 rpms. it may not be the red, but i cant see any thing else that would be the red line, but if it red lines at 5250 rpm what engine from fiat would have such a low red line.

    47. photo
      saabaru1181 days ago

OH Haha I had NO idea what you were trying to say. Thanks for clearing that up. I can’t tell if thats the red line either.

Chrysler’s R&D and Marketing efforts seem to be misdirected. While the more successful auto manufacturers are looking to phase out most, if not all of their gasoline powered engines, here is Chrysler engineering a new gasoline engine?

Development cost recovery for a new engine is typically over 4-6 years. If you want to believe the 2010 DoD J.O.E. Report or the recent Oxford report on petroleum reserves, petroleum sourced gasoline may no longer be sold within 5-6 years as the price is projected to be over $5/gallon while the US can produce several billion gallons of biodiesel sustainably per year at a price of $4-$5/gallon.

EV’s and Hybrids do not look promising – too expensive and radically different infrastructure model. So the only long term solution is biodiesel/syndiesel. Few people understand that one of the main reasons Daimler purchased Chrysler was to replace the gasoline engines with CRD/TDI engines. They did so and very effectively, but the US Public Administration Policy artificially kept gasoline prices low via subsidies to the petroleum companies. This kept biodiesel investment and production low.
