Leaked document gives up the goods on Audi TT RS

10/30/2008, 2:52 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Audi TT is slated to its first true performance model in the form of the TT RS, but the German automaker has made sure to keep a lid on the car’s details. However, thanks to a leaked document intended for Audi dealers, we now know what to expect from the hotter TT RS.

As previously speculated, the Audi TT RS will be motivated by a 2.5L five-cylinder TSFI powerplant. Despite its modest displacement, the five-cylinder mill will crank out 340 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, according to World Car Fans. Power will be routed through a six-speed transmission, allowing the TT RS to hit 60 mph in a scant 4.5 seconds.

Although the TT RS will be the highest-performing TT ever, expect the German two-door — which will be available as a coupe and roadster — to return 24 mpg.

The TT RS’ exterior will feature new air inlets, 18 inch wheels and Audi’s signature RS oval exhaust outlets. Inside, look for plenty of leather and Alcantara, as well as RS badging.

No pricing information has yet been revealed, but the TT RS should hit the market in the third quarter of 2009.

I bet it’s priced within striking distance of Corvette. I’ll leave to you to decide where the smart money goes….

Umm, I don’t really like the 5 cylinder engine from VW, assuming it’s the same or derived from the 5 cylinder of the Rabbit/Jetta. It makes a nasty noise and requires lots of tricks to balance it correctly.

But maybe it’s a different engine altogether. Regardless, 340hp sounds pretty good, with quattro to boot.

gcorvette987, you’re right on power and performance adds on (maybe) but definitely not on gas-mileage. There’s no way a small 5 cylinder turbo will be beat by a hugh 8 cylinder, at least if both are driven reasonably for every day driving… I’m guessing the value provided is for a combined cycle, not the highway figure which should be WAY higher.

Also, the inside of the Audi will make the Corvette look like a plastic toy, as always…

How the hell did we end up comparing TTs to Corvettes? The Vette base model costs $49,000.00 The base TT is $34,000.00. There is NO WAY the price of this TT-RS is going anywhere near $49k. That’s just stupid. You might as well have an argument about which one has more trunk space.

Completely different engine from VW this is the old 5 cylinder design from the 90s, you know the one that the Ubergolf from Dahlback tuning has which produces 1400bhp fully builtup. They still can’t find a dyno that can measure its full power.

WRX, the TT with the 3.2 is in the mid 40’s. The TTRS will easily be $49K or more.

deutschetouring1337,

That’s excellent news, I was worried with the tendency of the VW group sharing parts so much that they might have made the mistake of using the same stupid engine as the 5 cylinder they have here for the Rabbit.

What a relief…

300+HP, 2.5L Turbo, AWD.. sounds like it wants to compete against WRX STi and Lancer Evo. Too bad it will cost way way way more. And it will be pointless.

This looks like it should be a pretty cool car, but I wonder what the pricetag is gonna be. Probably a bit too high to justify compared to just buying a TT and then tuning it.
