Hi - I hope this website lives up to it's promise. I have a question that I hope you or your viewers can answer:

I purchased my first station-wagon (a Volvo 240 model) in 1973, and it weighed around 3200 pounds. My current wagon (a 2003 VW Jetta), with smaller physical dimensions, weighs about the same. After 30 years, with the introduction of plastic and aluminum weight-saving materials, I think that my current automobile should weigh around 2700 pounds. Where are the supposed weight savings going? I cannot believe that air-bags (and the associated electronics) weigh that much!

These two vehicles are comparable: four cylinders, turbocharged, four-wheel disk brakes, automatic transmission. The VW does get better gas mileage (34 mpg vs. 27mpg for the Volvo), but I attribute that to better engine/transmission design. What could the VW do with 500 pounds less weight?

 Thanks, Gareth

Good luck on your new site. I'm a Mac enthusiast but also a car nut, so I look forward to reading about cars from the same people who produce my favorite Mac news site!
