Like its more powerful IS 350C sibling, the Lexus IS 250C is the Japanese luxury automaker's second factory-built convertible ever. In response to customer demand for a less-expensive, more performance-oriented four-seat convertible, Lexus introduced in late 2009 the IS C as a 2010 model.

Based heavily on the architecture that underpins the traditional IS 250 and IS 350 sedans, the IS C drop-tops feature just two doors and a sophisticated, fast-moving folding metal roof. Unlike the sedans, they seat just four passengers.

The IS 250C anchors the entry-level segment of the range. Powered by the automaker's 2.5-liter V6 engine, the IS 250C puts out 204 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 185 lb-ft. at 4,800 rpm. The sophisticated V6, which meets Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle standards, features four valves per cylinder and dual variable valve timing.

Mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters, the IS 250C accelerates to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, according to Lexus. Due to gear ratios, the automatic manages better fuel economy at 21 mpg around town and 29 mpg on the highway, compared to 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for the manual transmission.

Rear-wheel-drive is standard on all IS Cs; the sedans' optional all-wheel-drive is not available. The IS 250C's fully independent suspension is augmented by standard traction and stability control.

The IS 250C cheats the wind with a low 0.29 Cd with its metal roof in the up position. Capable of folding in a mere 21 seconds, the three-piece aluminum roof is fully insulated and stows behind a built-in hard tonneau. Though the folded roof takes up most of the trunk space, 10.8 cubic feet are available with the top in the upright position.

Inside, the IS 250C is much the same as the sedan -- aside from a much smaller two-place rear seat and its two-door configuration. The dashboard and controls are essentially identical.

Standard 17-inch wheels mate to a firm suspension, meaning the IS C is a decidedly sports-oriented option for sun worshippers.

Few options are available aside from a few packages. Heated and ventilated front seats, as well as a power-sliding and folding front seat (for access to the rear), 18-inch wheels and Lexus' Intuitive Parking Assist make the options chart in addition to the three packages.

A package combining a navigation system with XM NavTraffic capability and a Mark Levinson-branded 12-speaker, 270-watt surround sound audio system are available. The six-CD changer is also capable of playing DVD audio.

The Luxury Package adds premium perforated leather trim to go with the heated and ventilated front seats, as well as memory front seats, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and bi-xenon adaptive front headlamps.

The Luxury Package is also available with two-tone blue Alabaster seat trim for those desiring a more expressive interior style.

Lexus' F Sport performance options are also available as dealer-installed items. They range from upgraded brakes to a lower back pressure exhaust system.
