Shaver, last I heard Toyota and Subaru decided to keep working on the project but delayed it from a 2011 to 2012 launch. If you're right... well... you could say it's their loss but it's really the loss of people who want an affordable and fun car. Nissan outright axed their 240SX program but I haven't heard that of Toyota-Subaru.

As for the LF-A, isn't any manufacturer's high performance car someone's ego trip? It may very well not stack against the competition if/when it is released for sale but at least Toyota is doing something in the fast car camp.

Lexus, just come out with the freaking car already. You've been showing teaser shots for quite some time now with no numbers, no nothing. We know a bit about the engine, and we know a bit about the transmission and we can pretty much guess what the car is going to look like. Now the question is, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND ACTUALLY GIVE US SOMETHING MORE THAN MORE TEASER SHOTS!?!?!?! Yeah, you've got a car at the 24-hour 'ring race, that's great. But what about an estimated production date or something? You've got a lot to live up to now with the ZR1 and the GT-R.

MasterYoda2005 @ 05/20, 10:11p

As with, it seems most Japanese automakers, TOYOTA elected to keep most of the best stuff at home. But the majority of Lexus Cars are in fact purpose developed for that division. Lexus is a not entirely a bunch of dressed up TOYOTA, the obvious exceptions, the SUVs not withstanding, being the ES series cars, being a redressed Camry and soon a Prius.

It is this fact that Lexus has clout. Much as CADILLAC does NOT share the SIGMA platform with any other division, so too does LEXUS share almost nothing with TOYOTA as a division.

Mind you I'm not defending TOYOTA or LEXUS. I'm not pleased that DETROIT basically keeps tossing away every possible advantage they have or could have out of administrative, financial, and/or political expedience. "Anything to stay in business though not necessarily make money."

Cars like the GT-R35 and this LF-A are the direct result of sticking to a plan that makes these cars, otherwise pointless against the rest or their portfolios, possible.

Also, I'm betting the LF-A will school the GT-R35. It's first unofficial times at Nurburgring were around 7min24sec. The car is much quicker than it lets on. I don't think the GT-R35 SpecV can beat THE ZR-1 as is, but the LF-A may well. Hopefully CHEVROLET takes the hint and invests heavily in making the C7 more in line with the competition, much more brains not just more brawn. The C6 is pretty tough to untouchable as is, a some formula tech and the C7 will be the monster to beat.

As in the Truck wars, before gas prices scuttled that whole party, the last one to the field has the advantage because they now know just what they are going up against and can prepare for it. High-end sports cars are much more dramatic in showing this than trucks or family sedans.

Hyperion; Hate to break it to you, the Toyobaru coupe has been axed.
This project has been a personal ambition (read:ego trip) of the chief of Toyota. This will be embaressed by the Scuderia just like Glock and Trulli are in F1 on every Sunday.

@ scratchy: haha pretty much looks that way.

@masteryoda2005: You left out Nissan, they still build performance models very worthy of attention. I would say you left out Honda as well but it looks as though they're going the way of Toyota as well. The S2000 will be missed.

And I agree with everyone else in the fact that it should be a supra instead of a super car. IMO you don't start at the top of the line, you work your way up. They should put out a supra or something comparable in power and price to say the mustang or z then make a Lexus version. Sort of like the G35/350Z and G37/370Z.

I hope they build the damn thing and sell it for at least a couple of years. After all of this R&D it would be a shame for them to "pull an Acura".

As for the rest of us without bottomless checkbooks, the Toyobaru coupe can't arrive any sooner.

Yeah you'd Eat it all right as I Rammed my Fist through your Teeth breaking everyone upper and lower and then out the back of your head like a 357 Magnum Hollow point. Just blowing out all that Fat you have crammed between your F in ears boy splattering that pea you call a brain and your Fat everywhere. Making real mess for someone to clean up. You'd almost be ready for Nascar with your fat hanging all out and laid out in your overalls. I'll leave ya a 6 pack of your favorite Red Neck Beer and Fried POrk Skin Rhines.

Blakkarr..... you may have a point that Lexus carries some prestige. But unlike the uneducated massess I know that alot of Lexuses (Lexi?) are nothing but gussied up Toyotas. The same way pretty much all Lincolns are dolled up Fords. Unfortunately, no matter how you slice it, a person who has over 100K to blow on a car is probably not going to spend that on a Lexus that will do nothing but underperform compared to the cars in its class. Like most Lexuses they are overpriced Toyotas....why do you think it took Toyota so long to roll out Lexus in Japan?? and when it finally happened it didnt do as well as expected. because the japanese are smart enough to know NOT to pay a sh*t load of money for a Toyota in a tuxedo. When it comes to sports cars i say Fvck the label show me the numbers!! I thank Nissan and Chevy for putting all those Germs and Italians in their place. i just cant wait until this thing hits production so at three year old GT-R can spank it.

Bankruptcy2009 has one on order with his 1000-hp all-aluminum engine from the Sony Playstation while I'm boning his mom at my repair shop in the back of my Rustang.

This car is easily the best looking Car Toyota has made to date. The Supra was a close second, and I hope a new one apes the aesthetic heavily. It was cool with that basic gray it had during early testing.

MasterYoda2005, They don't laugh now when you roll up in LEXUS. But this is a weird sidestep for the company known for stubbornly building only basic transportation.

Raineman, I would fully agree Toyota needs a new sports car, A Supra, not just this a Super Sports car.

Then again FORD could due with building a proper sports car. The Mustang is great, a total refinement of the old muscle car architecture. But FORD needs a Permanent sports car on its roster. I would hope for a new THUNDERBIRD or that FORD Buys the VIPER off DODGE, though that seems unlikely as CHRYSLER only discontinued the car and sold the factory but never sold the rights to build the VIPER or use the name.

I second that notion RaineMan. It makes sense. But wait a second if Toyota builds a sports car that isnt super eco friendly and a good chunk of Americans have access to it that may tarnish Toyotas reputation. So maybe they are better off sucking the tail pipes of 100K+ cars..hahaha Seriously a Lexus supercar?? what a joke maybe they should create a new brand for the LF-A. That way people at the yatch club wont laugh at you when you pull up in your 100K Toyota.

I remember growing up and wanting a Toyota MR-2 so badly. I remember when they made the Supra which is still one of my favorite cars to this day....I feel like when Toyota made the step away from making passionate driving machines to making fuel efficient appliances they lost a bit of their mojo. I'm not mad at them for doing it because it obviously was a good move (as they are not perceived as badly as GM/Chrysler) and they have had tremendous success with the 'green business model'. I just feel like they have forgotten how to make a bad ass sports car. This LF-A 'sounds' promising and I am sure it will be fast, but just like all other sporty Toyotas they suck c*ck in their class. Examples Toyota Corolla S-- i'd rather have a Civic Si, or Cobalt SS. the IS-F--are they serious? would rather have a M3, Merc C63. the GS-F--this thing has to run with M5s, E63s, CTS-v's, and it doesnt.
They should stick to what they know and what they are known for, and thats building relaible, soul-less, affordable, uninspiring appliances. Leave the driving machines to the Germans and the Americans.

I wonder if Lexus will actually pull out with the LF-A, unlike the NSX. MAbye if the LF-A does come out, the NSx will not be canned after all. Lets hope!!
