Following the most recent trend in the luxury segment, Lexus could be planning a compact mode for the United States market. If Lexus goes ahead with the compact model, it will likely be based on the LF-Ch concept first shown at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
A version of the LF-Ch will surface in European showrooms during the first part of next decade, but the compact hatchback could also be destined for Lexus’ U.S. dealerships. Mark Templin, Lexus’s General Manager, revealed to The Detroit Bureau that the LF-Ch could be for sale in the United States by 2012.
“There is a group of buyers growing up now who won’t buy cars by the pound,” Templin said. Templin added Lexus has already seen a shift to smaller vehicles and expects that trend to continue for the foreseeable future.
If given the green light, the Lexus LF-Ch would naturally compete with the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3. However, don’t expect the smaller Lexus to carry a bargain-basement price tag. “We’re not going to build a smaller vehicle with all that technology (found in the likes of a top-line LS sedan) and knock the price down,” Templin said. “Just because it’s small doesn’t mean cheap.”
Lexus will keep an eye on public reaction as the LF-Ch makes its U.S. debut at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show and resurfaces at the Detroit show in January. If the LF-Ch is met with praise, it could hit Lexus dealers by 2012. Despite the LF-Ch’s hybrid badging, the initial production version will likely be powered by a conventional drivetrain.

Good luck with this Lexus – I kinda hope you are right, but you’re going to be again dissapointed. There was a survey to younger people recently on what they wanted in a future automobile and guess what they said – more fuel effecient? – yes, more gagets? – yes smaller? – nope. Basically it boils down to this – the US population is not going to pay more for less and by less I mean size.
Unless it’s a sports car or has something to do with sportyness – do you see people spending Lexus GS or even IS money for a smaller hatchback? I just don’t see it working. Audi has the A3 – true, but I don’t see people lining up for the ones that are priced like the larger A4 – and why would you?
I would like to see Lexus sell a hatchback in the sub $30k catagory, but for them to think of it as a $35-45k car is going to give them a rude awakening in the US.

I didn’t think the LF-Ch was bad, but it had a lot of funky little things about it that made it look ugly. There wasn’t anything special about it, it was about the most stereotypical shape for a hatchback you could get with a bunch of ugly lines and details.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a hatchback/station wagon version of the IS, however. If they go with something separate like this, sell it for around $28k, to undercut the IS some and be in the range of younger(ish) buyers.

I agree Jake. If these luxury car companies want to build a luxury compact car, they are going to have to price it under $30k. Otherwise, what’s the point? MPG is only part of the package people want. If these luxury car companies think they can price these cars over $30k and sell them based on improved MPG only, they are sadly mistaken. I would buy a car for over $30k with more amenities and accept 2MPG-3MPG less. I don’t consider this rocket science thinking here. It’s all logic people.

This market shift Lexus speaks of is several years away, I believe
In 2020, we will be buying smaller cars, and using cars much differently
But this car will be a niche player for the forseeable future

nickkop,
too bad those are totally different cars. I don’t care about tracks or anything else that would embarrass it, whats embarrassing is the fit and finish of the sti and wrx! The interior of both of those cars that you mentioned gets beat by a frikin civic! FAIL!!! I guess that boy racer thing leaves as you finish high school! Whatever floats your boat right? The perception that vw vehicles fail after 36k miles is as huge and false as the toyotas never braking down or needing a fix! Own one before making a statement based on some other idiots lame remarks!

You know, if you are informed, that Toyota/Lexus cars and trucks are outstanding in crash tests. The best you’ll find on the market
Now they’ve just added a new variable
Only about 2 dozen vehicles now overachieve in roof standards
Only the truly ignorant (you) would figure Toyotas/Lexus are not excellent at safety

idrinor… actually ive leased / owned 2 mark V jettas – TDI and GLI 2.0t,
MkIV GTI, mkIV GLI 1.8t 6-speed., i sold new and used VW’s and have driven many mkV GTI / one or two R32’s
the MkVI GTI looks like a significant improvement… very nice.. but its just not that important… obviously you have never been in a new WRX, though if you are even remotely comparaing it to a civic (which, with respect to it, is quite nice as well for the money)…
fail actually it looks like a big FAIL for mr.vw fanboy

“the MkVI GTI looks like a significant improvement… very nice.. but its just not that important… ”
That makes no sense! Not important for what purpose/reason?
Ok, show me one post that speaks of their great interior quality(wrx/sti)! There is none!!!! I have been in all of those cars, that’s why I mentioned what I said! The interior quality of the civic DOES exceed that coming from the wrx and sti!
I like how you quickly jumped on the fanboy wagon! I guess to you, stating a fact instantly makes you a fanboy of that car/manufacturer!
I suggest you go watch that video SCRATCHY posted and learn something!

that is your opinion, buddy….
and i like your point about how these cars are completely different… wow
why? because the wrx offers an interior “almost as nice as a civic” lol thats just too funny…
but 65 more horsepower and about 37more lb-ft torque from its Turbo Boxer…. + All Wheel Drive…
same if not much better long term reliability(50k-120k miles) (unless it is significantly modified)
+rally heritage
price only about 1100 more than a base 4 door gti for a base four door wrx (1600 more for the 5dr hatch)

you can go buy your gti with fwd and 200hp for a little less or the same price as the wrx
(good luck finding a dealer with any base gti on their lot, most are pre-ordered by the dealer with options and hence a sticker price between %24,500 and 25,000)
all see you on the highway… and laugh at you…. hahahah,
