Lexus’ 2011 LFA makes North American debut

12/02/2009, 3:06 PM

By Drew Johnson

Following its world debut at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, the Lexus LFA has taken to the North American stage for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Fittingly, one of the LFA’s closest competitors — the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG — is also making its North American introduction at the LA show.

As expected, the Lexus LFA features an all-new 4.8L V10 with a screaming red line of 9,000rpm. Power is rated at 552 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. Although maximum twist doesn’t come on until the needle sweeps past the 6,800rpm mark, Toyota says that 90 percent of the LFA’s torque is available between 3,700rpm and 9,000rpm.

Power is sent to the LFA’s rear wheels via Toyota’s new paddle-shifted six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox. Set low and back in the LFA’s chassis, the unit contributes to the car’s nearly ideal 48:52 front-to-rear weight distribution.

In order to keep the LFA light on its feet, Toyota relied heavily on lightweight materials for nearly every aspect of the supercar. Aluminum was originally planned for the LFA’s construction but engineers ultimately decided to use Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic for the car’s chassis and body. Designed in-house by Toyota, the Japanese automaker says CFRP is four times stronger than aluminum yet netted a 100kg weight savings.

The LFA also feature Carbon Ceramic Material brakes, which are both lighter than steel and more fade-resistant. In total, the LFA weighs about 3,300 pounds.

The net result of Toyota’s efforts is a vehicle that can accelerate from 0-60 in just under 3.7 seconds, with a claimed top-speed of 202mph. Sales will be limited to just 500 units, with no more than 20 examples to be made per month. As with most supercars, the LFA will be highly customizable, with buyers able to choose from 30 paint colors or delete standard equipment such as the car’s audio system. The Lexus LFA will first launch in the UK, carrying a hefty price of £336,000 ($557,000).

It looks really good, to me. Toyota did a really good job on this one. I still think three tailpipes on a V10 is kind of goofy, but it’s definitely a respectable design.

I won’t talk about price, because either way, I’m not one of the 160 people that can (and will) get one.

I think so too beatus. And when you look at it there’s no mistaking the fact that it’s not American, European, Italian or otherwise… it’s definitely Japanese. I’d even go so far as to say it’s the best looking car to come out of there since the NSX.

But for that kind of money it had damn well better be.

==>>lol aesir you are totally right about that. But like 0-60 said, that pricetag is a very big hunk of change, almost apporoaching the msrp of the Enzo back when it was released in 2003. But this car is one of the best looking sports/supercars to come out PERIOD since i don’t know when

awesome car, props to toyota for making such car but do they really have to charge half mill for this? put a right price tag let it compete with gtr and 911turbo because profile wise it is more of supra image rather than enzo/carrera gt fighter.

Its ugly, overpriced and terrible. I wonder what will happen when the throttle sticks wide open on this thing? The reason so few are coming to North America is because after we witness its lackluster performance and the media lambastes it for being an overpriced pig nobody will want one. No Lexus, you cannot charge 500K for a car designed in-house that is a copy cat of other cars.

You know its not worth more than 80K, I know it and soon the world will know it.

FAIL

Incredible car in every way but wow…..still can’t get over that price. Exclusitivity has it’s advantages but 557k is simply ridiculous and stupid. Other then being so rare and new, why would you ever pick this thing over other capable supers- especially like the new Ferrari 458 Italia which will most likely outperform the LF-A in every way? Lexus is a solid brand but geeeeeez, wha the h are they thinking??!

I’ll still admit, if i had that ridiculous amount of money to spend I’d buy one in a heart beat and park it right next to my AMG SLS, 458 Italia, GTR, and new Mclaren.

Also, I’m willing to bet this is going to beat the GTR hands down NMOFGM’s Daddy. As much as I wish it wouldn’t be true, I can’t see Lexus coming out with a car that hasn’t had the GTR, among others, in it’s sights to beat. With more power, less weight, and an equally incredible transmission I’d think this contest would be a no-brainer.

And yes I realize the prize difference and the whole argument about who and what this new exotic or class is competing with. If it has 4 wheels and an engine they’re all competing. A ZR1 out on the streets isn’t going to turn down a drag race if it ever met a Pagani even though one costs 4 times as much as the other.

zeegone beegone, honestly i can put about $50k worth of mods into a stock GTR and it will spank this Toyota’s ass with my eyes closed, and I will still have enough scratch left for an even bigger panty dropper, the Murcielago.

I dunno son, seems like a Toyota fail to me.

i think this is one of the top 5 ugliest cars ever made. all carbon fiber but 100kg heavier than the F458, slower and less powerful too, wtf ? i bet most of the guys who will buy this car are people who dreamt about owning a Supra when they were young but could not afford it , but now they sold a few albums , moved some coke around and can afford this Uber-Supra. and the rest will be speculants and buy this car hoping the price will increase like it did for the F1 and Enzo.

when i see supercars on the street , i’m a little envious of the owners , but i can’t be envious of someone who owns this ugly thing.

+1 for cino…the engine noise this thing makes is amazing…and judging it by specs or 0-60 times or w/e is missing the point, really…not to mention cost…nobody who buys this will give a damn what it costs…and i doubt that anybody who would be interested in this would give a crap about a gtr, either…

annyways, the car is amazing, as anyone and everyone in the media has already attested to. kudos to toyota for developing a superb piece of machine that looks the part and sticking another one to the naysayers. and i love the gtr but nmo daddy, seriously? what’s with the childish high school talk? you can put 50k in a honda civic and blow the doors off a ferrari too, so what?

very clever there NMOFGMs daddy- you clearly missed my obvious point with pricing and power. Of course you could throw money at any car and have it easily beat a much more expensive one. Point being- stock vs stock, I bet (don’t know) the Lexus will beat the beloved GTR as it should with that kind of price. Have you seen the vids of the upgraded GTR racing ZR1, carrera GT’s, and other supers on youtube……..and winning- sick!

@ Cino- very much agreed with the LFA sound.

When the throttle sticks on that car you’ll be dead before you even knew what happened. Maybe Toyota should be spending more on safety and quality than a fast car that’s way overpriced and ugly. Maybe GM and Chrysler are not the only companies making bad choices.
