A report coming out of Malaysia indicates that Lexus is mulling the development of a small hatchback that will slot beneath the CT as an entry-level offering.

If given the green light for production, the yet-unnamed hatchback will likely ride on the same platform as the recently-launched Toyota Prius C. It will be aimed squarely at premium hatchbacks like the MINI Cooper, the Audi A1 and the Fiat 500.

Far from mere badge-engineering, Lexus designers will likely give the hatchback a style of its own to differentiate it from the Prius C. The interior will be well-appointed and better screwed together than that of the Toyota's.

The entry-level version of the Lexus hatchback will borrow its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and its hybrid system from the Toyota Prius C. A more expensive variant will be powered by a downsized 1.2-liter four-cylinder that will be fed with a turbocharger.

While nothing is set in stone at this point, the addition of a compact hatchback would help Lexus increase its market share in Europe, where buyers have traditionally given Japanese luxury cars a very lukewarm welcome.

If the rumor is true, Lexus will unveil its entry-level hatchback in 2014 at the earliest. The car will be sold in Europe and in Japan but it is unlikely to make the trip over to the United States.
