Toyota today announced it will sell its new 2008 LS 600h L luxury hybrid sedan for $104,000 when it reaches Lexus dealers in June. The all-wheel-drive 430 hp LS 600h L will be the world’s first vehicle powered by a full hybrid V8 powertrain and will be mated to a newly developed dual-stage electronically controlled, CVT transmission. $104k? Screw that. Someone will pay it, but it aint gonna be me.
Those who think Lexus sky-high pricing isn’t going to open the doors for the likes of the Hyundai Genesis are kidding themselves. Lexus, and to a degree Infiniti, are leaving a wide price gap beneath themselves the same way that MB and BMW did before teh japanese upstarts came in and kicked their asses around. The Hyundais of the world are going to do the same thing.

For those of us that don’t like this car very much, well simply put we’re not necessarily in their demographic. Nice concept, and I think it will be fairly successful. What some fail to understand is that a large proportion of the wealthy *DO* care about fuel consumption, just as they care about energy use in their homes and businesses. This can potentially be a large part of monthly expenses, so any chance to reduce outgoing cashflow while improving the bottom-line and/or performance is a win-win. That’s how you obtain wealth, that’s how you grow wealth, that’s how you maintain wealth. It’s also a good way to greenwash your operation.
Any hedge fund traders here? Lots of their money is being made in energy commodities, so the more fuel we all use, the more money they’ll make b/c of refinery utlilization and gasoline stocks being down, in addition to dozens of other factors. The smart play is to buy a fuel-efficient car now (or walk), invest the savings in oil and natural gas production and distribution, and wait a couple of years to buy that Veyron, b/c that’s when you’ll be swimming in cash as everyone else moans about $6/gallon gasoline.
I saw this car at the Washington Auto Show and it really was a stunner. Now if Bentley follows Lexus’ lead….

For that kind of scratch, I’d rather have a E-Class diesel, and have enough left over for a complete solar electric system on my house…that’s a more efficient solution IMO.

Anyone who would pay this much money for a Lexus is INSANE! Give me a break. This brand is so over-hyped! Think of what you can get for that price! Not to mention all other cars you can get for that actually have a pulse and don’t isolate the driver from the road. This cars are BORING and do not have half the brand equity of a BMW or MB.

90% of the time you are NOT buying a car in this segment as a freakin’ joy ride!!! You’re argument of this car being “over-hyped” because it’s not as fun to drive as a 7 series is dumb. People who can afford this car have multiple cars anyway, and not every rich cat wants to feel the road when they drive (or in many cases ride) in an $100,000+ luxury car. Most automotive journalist (even Jeremy Clarkson) praise these cars when it feels like your gliding on a cloud…or when you can’t even tell that you’re going 190 mph. You don’t have to like the car but come up with something else to say! That goes for everybody who talks about feeling the road in a boat…sheesh.

The Lexus LS460 is not a very attractive or glamorous car. It evens borders on ugly with its Toyota “tumor†styling. It’s not even that fast for a 380 hp vehicle with 0-60 time in the mid sixes, and if the road tests are to be believed, the brakes barely work. You are no more isolated from the road than you are in an S550 and the S550 gives you handling that is not only more capable in terms of raw numbers but also more reassuring in a tactile sense.

I thought the $104K price was eye-poppingly ridiculous until I priced the “regular” LS 460L.. almost $80K base, without any of the goodies most luxury buyers will add! For as much VW bashing as everyone does here, that makes the similarly sized/equipped $65K Phaeton V8 look like an amazing bargain, and they couldn’t give them away! Lexus is becoming as arrogant as M-B and BMW were when Lexus pulled the rug out from under them.. and let’s see if Hyundai (and perhaps even Cadillac) doesn’t follow Lexus’ successful pricing strategies of the past!

Lambo … wrong. I can, actually, but I wouldn’t pay 104k for this or any car. No vehicle is worth that unless it is a piece of equipment employed to make more money (like a Kenworth). Personally I’m waiting for Tesla to come out with their 5-series killer. When that hits the streets (and not this hybrid crap) I’ll gladly join the greenie crowd.
That being said, if I were to pay 104k for a car, this would not be it. Has nothing to do with it being Japanese, but at those prices you are buying brand cache as much as anything. Lexus does not carry that cache, IMHO.

Actually right now Hybrids make more sense than full electrics, But Telsa is really making headway on it so I give props to them. I wish them luck But I don’t think they are going to get far anytime soon. Maybe when they pick up fuel cells…
Parallel hybrids generally suck because they use the engine to move the car. Lexus is doing the same but mainly as a booster, like a turbo or supercharger, only radically more complex and expensive. Love those Japanese and their love of gadgets at the cost of good sense.
Serial hybrids (think Chevy VOLT) are the next better step using the engine to run a generator and not the wheels. Electricity is used to run motors running the wheels. Building motors and generators for the task is not a problem. But like say Telsa, someone needs to pony up and do it.

lotusfire – My comments are dumb? This site is for ENTHUSIASTS! Most ENTHUSIASTS want an car that you feel connected to, not a floaty boat. If you want a floaty boat that feels like your on a cloud, buy a Lincoln Town Car for 50k. For over 100k this thing better give me some feedback and not look like a well equipped Avalon (I know its not the same platform I’m just speaking of looks)
Have you even driven an S550 or 750? have you ever driven an LS460 for that matter – go road test all three and tell me which one you like better!

RSPINAJR, the fact that it has CVT should give you a clue. The car is simply designed to be driven by a chauffeur and if they can afford one you should start guessing about their yearly net income. Like the Nissan President, this is the very model that’s made and marketed to those who care the most about comfort over performance. There is a market for it, it’s priced just right, and it will sell. The S and 7 series are priced right too, but just on a different segment.
If automotive business news are allowed in this site, a new model passenger car annoucement should be more than welcome.

Unfortunately the world market isn’t ready yet for a luxury Hyundai. It’s an image problem mostly given the previous bad models. But those who can get over their need for an ego boost may have the option of owning a real luxury car at bargain price.
