Lexus RX to become 7-seater?

08/08/2007, 9:28 AM

By Andrew Ganz

The next generation Lexus RX line of SUVs, which are due for the 2009 model year, could include a third row of seats in order to compete better with the Mercedes-Benz ML and the Acura RDX, among others. The new RX will build on the current model’s design themes (shown) and will almost certainly include a hybrid version.

British magazine AutoExpress reports that the 7-seat RX will likely debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, where it will be badged a Lexus, not a Toyota. The current model and its predecessor were both badged Toyota Harriers in Japan. The RX will be the first Lexus-badged SUV in the home market.

Hello? Fact-checking department? You’re fired!

The Mercedes M Class doesn’t offer a third row, and neither does the Acura RDX. A third row would allow the RX to keep up with the new BMW X5 and Volvo XC90, however.

Highlander gets bigger, than so will the RX. Competing with the M-B ML? Only two rows of seats there, with a step up to the GL for three rows. Also, Lexus will grow the RX so they can come out with something smaller to compete with the RDX, EX, and X3. Most of you could care less, but some family guys read this site, and find this interesting.

They must mean the MDX it has three rows. The RDX never will unless it grows too. It’s way too small.

I think Toyota is mad that the Koreans built a SUV just as nice as theirs for 10K grand less. I bet they can stand that commercial where the lady confuses the hyundai veracruz for her lexux RX350. Hilarious!! gotta love those koreans, pretty smart, and they have bombs too!!

Although it’s not specifically stated by LLN, I think the marketing point being made by Lexus is that if the new RX has third-row seating, then it will be more enticing than the ML and RDX alternatives which have none.
I still think Lexus is comparing apples to oranges, especially throwing the Acura in there. I don’t think RDX shoppers cross-shop ML-class mercs or the Lexus RX. RX’s start at $37,400, and a 7-seater will certainly be more. The cheapest ML starts at $44,420. The RDX starts at $33,195. Besides the cost, the RDX is in a different class. The RX and ML, I’m sure, are considered mid-size SUVs, and the RDX is a compact SUV.
Considering how expensive the ML is, though I think Lexus has a point. If it can undercut the ML, keep up the luxury features, and offer 3 rows of seating, it might be a better deal.

Scar, it’s not going to be a better deal, unless it sells for $500 or less. The RDX/CRV and the Camry wagon (even with an “L” on the front) has no place in a discussion along with a Benz.

You’re comparing apples (MBZ) with pears (Volvo) and Chickpeas (”RX” and RDX/CRV)

Yoda.
How could you mistake a hyundai for such an inferior product? I like that commercial, too.

adambravo: Melanie Jagger has a better chance of passing barry Bonds in career homers than toyota does of making a bmw equivalent. Sub melanie with Al iafrate, and that’s their chances of matching a Volvo

jackjim – bro, did you just compare a hyundai to a lexus? I mean I’m def not Toyota’s number 1 fan but Lexus is definately luxury. Is it comparable to a BMW? That’s arguable but for me BMWs are for the driving expirience (which is more important to me) and Lexuses are for the technology stuff. MBenz is kind of both, but it also builds gorgeous cars like the new CL600. Hyundai is definetely trying but right now they are in the Mercury/Buick-2nd, maybe 3rd class category.
RobCali – thanks :]

Deanster, Hyundai is good really well right now. As I’ve been saying, GM should be much more worried about Hyundai in the long-term than about Toyota. I wouldn’t put Hyundai in the Lexus-BMW-Benz pack soon though, UNLESS they create their own luxury division, Genesis as a brand of its own. Hyundai name is already well known and respected (big change from the 90s) so why change its image so drastically now?

So you’re a “conservative” republicrat. Go ahead and bow at your jesse helms altar, see if I care. But it does explain why people who disagree with you are “ignorant.” Wake up!

Commodore: Hyundai is better than toyota, including it’s faux-luxury division you can consider that a slam against toyota if you’d like, or you can say that hyundais are better than many people know, or anything in between

Hyundai made the comparison before I did — wise move. Hyundai, unlike GM, is not pussyfooting when it comes to advertising

Mercury should either get new exclusive vehicles or go away. Buick is below real luxury cars and above VW and stuff like that. FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR above (L)oyota!

If Hyundai starts a luxury division, they should not go the japanese route. They should actually have the division make NEW and DIFFERENT cars, not jut rebadge accords, camryys and maximas.

Genesis would be a good name

But of course, the number of retards in america continues to increase ….

deantj: you’re predicting that hyundai will develop 360° vision, or that they will be better than buick?

—- No. You’re biased in general. All your arguments boil down to is ignorant and boarderline paranoid xenophobia.

“So you’re a “conservative” republicrat. Go ahead and bow at your jesse helms altar, see if I care.”
—- and “ad hominem” attack which offers nothing to any argument. I happen to like Michael Savage and all, but the least you can do is be original and stop ripping off his terminology.

“But it does explain why people who disagree with you are “ignorant.” Wake up!”

Do you even know what xenophobia is?

Commodore generally talks sense, even when he makes a choice i wouldn’t.

an ad-hominem attack? You called yourself as conservative, repulsivecan as they come. That’s helms territory, is it not? Now you wish to distance yourself from helms? Good move.

MAJOR INPROVEMENT FOR THE LEXUS RX.

Firstly, have you ever sat in the back seat of the Lexus GX, LX, or Acura MDX? Where are your Knees, feet, and even legs supposed to go – Into your chin and behind your head? The GX seat fold up to the side taking away cargo space and look ugly. The LX is a “turd†and I’m glad they are bringing out the new 570 model. The MDX is difficult to get into the third row (only the passenger seat in the middle slides forward and down) and the middle row does not fold completely flat.

Secondly, the Lexus RX does not compare to the Acura RDX. The fit and finish qualities are completely different and the RDX drive a lot like the VW R32 (all wheel drive and stiff suspension) Plus it has a turbo!

If the RX puts a third row seat into the vehicle the dimensions will increase the size and also change the rear design. This will cause dramatic changes in sales by losing a demographic that do not want the third row seat similar to the MDX losing sales as well.

I have sold Lexus in the past and now I am selling Acura’s – I know my products very well!!
