Lexus uveils ‘Project GS’, four IS customs at SEMA

11/05/2008, 4:06 PM

By Drew Johnson

Lexus is widely regarded as one of the least driver-oriented luxury marques, but the Japanese automaker is working hard to change its image. At last year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Lexus took the wraps off its high-performance IS F sedan, and Lexus is looking to continue its momentum with a series of show cars at this year’s show.

Lexus showed off four IS F show cars at SEMA this year – customized by Fox Marketing/Artisan Performance, Fox Marketing/Artisan Performance, 0-60 Magazine and MotorworldHype – but the brand’s crown jewel is a GS 460 customized by Five Axis.

Dubbed Project GS, the custom sports sedan was design by Troy Sumitomo and made its world debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. No word on any performance mods under the GS’ hood, but the sedan is sporting a body kit, 20 inch wheels, a unique paint job and upgraded brakes.

No mother-in-law on earth will love the rear doors shaved handles. If junior wants to make an impression, he’d better have more than one vehicle to tow the in-laws.

Those IS-F are really killer !!

Toyota is really not playin games with these cars…

The orange one is pushing over 600 hp……sweet jesus. On a small car like that.

The Lexus GS has wonderful Lines….one of the best designs on the market…but then again Lexus always makes beautiful cars.

Love Lexus.

That GS and the first IS are both sex on wheels! I LOVE the matte paint finish on those. The wheels are just killer too.

Nice GS, wish they had done something with the rear lights. I think they need lower profile tires though. Watch out for pebbles! LOL. Great looking design never the less.

Lexus has a long way to go if they want to compete with the likes of the AMG and M-series, RS series cars. In fact, I think it has a hard time competing with Infiniti when it comes to ’sports luxury’, let alone the Germans.

Lexus wants to have their cake and eat it, too. Cater to the sedate 50+ something group yet also bring in the up-and-comer 30-somethings. Sorry — doesn’t work that way. Mercedes and BMW can do it since they actually have innovative design and throw in a splash of performance, even at the expense of not maximizing their profit in making limited production cars.

Toyota is too concerned with not offending the masses with their cars and are far too conservative with their product. I don’t blame them for it — look at their financial position compared to the other car manufacturers. Now … if they can go back to their roots from the 80s — Supra, MR2, Trueno (a la Initial D) … cars that have soul … and translate it to modern design … they will give MB, BMW, Audi a run for their money. They have the resources — it’s whether or not the upper brass will give it the green light.

Nissan is up to the challenge … albeit some (innovative?) quirky designs like their SUVs and the love-it-or-hate-it GT-R. Toyota? Jury is still out on that one …

WTF…. Toyota???
Your kicking you own @$$…..
Are you trying to make your self’s look bad???
Ask any Lexus owner, they don’t drive a Toyota!!!
So why not give Toyota fan boy’s something new to drive, and the rest of us something to race against, because most of thou’s Supras out there are to dam fast for the streets…

I think that GS would look really good with similar vents on the sides like the IS-F. That would give it a great aggressive look.
