Lexus considers 'pure F GT car' with hybrid powertrain

Other F models could also benefit from an electrified powertrain, though it could be a while before the brand launches an all-electric performance car.

Lexus is apparently considering electrification for its flagship F-badged performance models.

Speaking to AutoExpress at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Lexus president Yoshihiro Sawa admits the industry is in a 'transition period' but he is skeptical that all buyers will immediately step away from their attraction to the sound and dynamics of combustion engines.

"I think we cannot stick to the one solution when it comes to providing emotion," he said.

The executive suggests the F range will eventually add some form of hybrid powertrain, stepping beyond the current focus on powerful V8 engines.

"One solution could be a pure F GT car, which could be a hybrid with an electric motor and a strong engine, giving a different kind of drive feel," he added. "We don't stick to V8, V10, twin-turbocharged; they're important but we're looking at the future. We'd like to find a way to connect to the next era."

For the brand's first all-electric model, the new UX crossover is said to be a likely candidate. Sawa says the company is still "searching to find which kind of EV will be lovable," however, and has not made a final decision.
