Would a Lexus minivan have legs?

The CEO of Lexus Manila thinks so.

A Lexus minivan is "only a matter of time," says Raymond Rodriguez, president of Lexus Manila. The Philippine importer of Lexus vehicles believes there is a opportunity for a luxury minivan in his country.

Though the minivan is often seen as something to be driven in shame (hence the crossover takeover) or only if one's family obligations absolutely demand it, it doesn't carry the same stigma in many Asian countries. In places like Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, vans are much more versatile. Offerings have included for decades hybrid vans for the eco-conscious, rugged 4WD vans for the off-roader, and leather-upholstered vans for executives with chauffeurs.

According to Lexus Enthusiast, Rodriguez was speaking to Philippine site Auto Industrya. "The chief executive of Lexus Manila said that a Lexus "Alphard” could be very successful in the market, if domestic sales figures -particularly the long waiting lists for the luxury van- are any indication."

The Alphard, a luxurious van made by Toyota with twin reclining lounge chairs in the back of its spacious cabin. Toyota could rebadge the Alphard, give it a new grille, and add some luxury features to the interior to create a Lexus van.

Auto Industrya continues, "[Rodriguez] also cited industry figures, particularly the Philippine sales of Mercedes-Benz vans: 105 units year to date. If Lexus can bring a van model with high levels of comfort and luxury, he said they can acquire a big chunk of that pie."

Whether that comes to fruition or not, don't expect it to come to the US.
