Lightning GT EV unveiled at London show

07/23/2008, 5:08 PM

By Drew Johnson

It seems that as of late there is no shortage of performance electric vehicles. Between the Tesla Roadster and the recently announced SSC Ultimate Aero EV, there should plenty of future options for zero-emissions fun. But add one more EV to the list as the Lightning GT electric vehicle has been unveiled at the London Motor Show.

Little details are known about the Lightning GT, but the few details that are available about the EV sound pretty good to us. Powered by four in-wheel electric motors, the Lightning GT will produce the equivalent of 700 horsepower. A carbon fiber body should help keep weight in check and allow the Lightning GT to hit 60 from a standstill in 4 seconds flat.

In true GT fashion, the Lightning GT will also sport all the features you would expect from a luxury coupe, including leather, air conditioning and satellite navigation.

No other details are available on the Lightning GT – including estimated price – but the Lightning GT’s maker, Lightning Car Company, is accepting £15,000 deposits.

Is this some kind of interenet scam? $30K without any details?

If it’s a scam then someone please scam me! I have been following the snippets of this automobile throughout the internet and it looks to be real.

700HP is an huge amount of power. Any current technology to power 700HP worth of electric motor will allow you to drive for about 10min. Some of these automakers must know something we don’t about a new power source that will make these cars feasable.

I hope its true, but I’m not holding my breath.

In comparison, the Tesla roadster has only a 1/3 of the power, requires almost 7000 lithium ion batteries, and still has a fairly limited range when driven with any kind of a heavy foot.

The Tesla isn’t a bad-looking car, but something about its design seems…”off.” This car, on the other hand, is uncompromisingly beautiful. It lacks any of the almost-compulsory electric car weirdness, and looks like the offspring of a passionate Mosler-DB9 love affair. But I can’t seem to shake this little voice in my head that keeps screaming, “too good to be true!” I’ve always had a profound respect for British, underdog engineering, from the likes of Lotus to TVR to Ariel. However, I can’t help but see undertones of Bristol in this car’s sketchy marketing campaign, and frankly, that scares the piss out of me. I’ve sent an inquiry to the company regarding pricing, range, and US time to market, so we’ll see what turns up. I think this car would be a hit if they could price it below $200k, but from the £15k deposit, that doesn’t seem likely. In the mean time, I’m sure we’ll all be waiting with rapt anticipation…

OK, so I can post links. The lag between the time I pressed submit comment and actually saw my comment led me to believe that I couldn’t post links. Anyhoo…..

I smell a lawsuit using the Lightning name without Ford’s permission. Looks a lot like an Aston Martin too. Freakin copycats.
