Like Taurus, Mercury Sable nameplate to return

02/06/2007, 3:50 PM

By admin

As if renaming the Five Hundred to Taurus wasn’t enough of a surprise, Ford may also announce plans this week to rename the Mercury Montego to Mercury Sable, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The name changes are the work of Ford’s new CEO Alan Mulally, who thought the millions invested in developing awareness of the Taurus and Sable names should not be thrown away.

According to this latest report, Freestyle is in line for a name change as well. Its new name might include an “X” to denote a crossover.

The redesigned Mercury Montego has not yet been unveiled, but spy photographers captured images of a nearly complete prototype almost two weeks ago. It’s a strong possibility, then, that the new Sable will debut this week at the Chicago auto show.

I might half agree with the Taurus call…the Sable, on the other hand, is a bad decision.
It was nothing more than an afterthought car…

Similarly, I think Mercury is nothing more than an afterthought brand.

Sable is better than Montego. But both suck. The car is boring regardless of what they name it. They could call it the Mercury Cobra R and it would still be boring.

And how much is this Mulally guy getting paid? This is like, straight out of Dilbert. I mean, really, Montego or Sable? Who cares? Only a tool would buy it because of the name change.

The first definition listed for “Sable” is:

- an Old World weasel-like animal.

source: dictionary.com

Who would want their car named after a weasel-like animal? It certainly doesn’t incite the feeling of power like Cougar (another Mercury product). Mind you, other carmakers have problem names too… Tiguan anyone?

Actually… kidding aside… Mercury has adopted an “M-name” stance to their current vehicles… witness the Milan, Mountaineer, Montego, Mariner, Monterey, and (grand) Marquis. In order to adhere to their chosen M-name trend, this car must be named the “MABLE”.

Anyone who sees a Mable on the street will think fondly of their great-aunt.

I’m in the opposite opinion on this one. I think Sable would be a better name for this vehicle. Somehow, I look at the car and Sable makes more sense than Montego.

I can’t really comprehend changing either name.. but Mercury stopped selling Sables several years ago, whereas the Taurus just disappeared (fleets and all) this year. So Taurus makes more sense to change than Sable.. but neither one seems logical or “bold”. Perhaps if the cosmetic changes were more extensive I could see it.. but the Montego is barely changed from the current model. I say change Taurus if you must, but leave Montego alone!

And what does Mullally plan to rename the Freestyle? TaurusX?

The Sable ended production in 2005…less than two years ago. Not terribly far removed.

It’s just that I have a Sable and my dad has a Montego…they’re totally different animals. The Montego is so much more massive and the interior is way ahead (the Sable’s center stack is not the most attractive in a car). Then again, my Sable is very different than a first-gen Taurus or Sable, so perhaps this move fits better than we think.

And no, Thomas, it doesn’t have to be the Mable, no more than the Taurus has to be the Faurus. Ford Edge, anyone? They changed their system so that doesn’t have to happen anymore (to prove it, the Fairlane is gonna be renamed).

Seeing all of the activity (new G8, Astra, Saab face, etc.) out of GM on this site only makes these Ford updates look all the more pathetic. Put away the violins, and get off the freakin’ Titanic already!

Well, the car will have the power and drivetrain options to be a bargain Audi A8…gosh, what a shame!

How awful to build a huge, quality (9.7 at Edmund’s, which is higher than the Avalon), comfortable, safe, awd car that’s about to get a 60 hp upgrade!

Yeah, boy, that just sucks…*coughmoronscough*

bring that one Mondeo over that has that 250hp engine in there from Brittain, then i’ll think about it… but oh no, ford’s CEO doesnt want to change the way their factories have been making cheap POS quality cars for years and years. it might cost them some xtra money to make a decent car,

Bring on the Ford Sable (I call it Stable). One of the worst cars I have ever seen and driven. Much like the Taurus (I call it the Crapus) another wannabe car that is not in touch with today’s market. Ford thinks that the American people live in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The two sister cars are horrible to look at and drive.

Get Real

Enough about Taurus being junk !!! It was better than most of garbage put out by GM and Chrysler they sold to people who spent good money on cars that broke a lot. My brother took his Taurus to 150K miles before the tranny let go. That tranny was the most expensive and weakest link in the Taurus, as was the 3.8 engine. If the FiveHundred/Taurus gets the tranny right (i.e.rid of the rubber-band-CVT) it could grow to be a best seller for Ford and restore some faith in their quality.

If you want to complain about JUNK, talk about the Dodge Intrepid. I got one brand new, what a money pit.
