Lincoln’s MINI-fighter: The C Concept [Live image update]

01/12/2009, 2:35 PM

By Mark Kleis

First unveiled at the 2009 North American Auto Show, Ford’s Lincoln luxury brand has created a futuristic eco-friendly concept called the Lincoln C Concept. The Lincoln C Concept is named after the segment for which it will belong for the first time for the brand – the C segment.

The C Concept is a C-sized car, built on the platform for the recently unveiled 2012 global Ford Focus. Because of its park-able size, Lincoln says the C Concept is aimed at the ‘urban consumer.’

“Modern luxury buyers who live and work in large, urban areas want to play their part in helping the environment by moving to a smaller vehicle, but they still want to enjoy the luxuries of life,” said Peter Horbury, executive director of Lincoln design, the Americas. “The Lincoln C offers sensible indulgence.”

At the heart of the C Concept is a 1.6L EcoBoost engine. Despite its compact size, the four-pot develops a healthy 180 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, ensuring performance isn’t completely sacrificed in the name of fuel economy. Given that it is still a Lincoln, owners will demand power that is at least relatable to the V8s they are accustomed to. However, fuel economy is still an excellent at 43 mpg.

The C Concept also packs plenty of technology, with voice activated everything – from its navigation system to its built-in organizer.

Although the C Concept looks good on paper, its in-the-flesh look is up for debate. Lincoln’s designers created the C Concept to look like a go-kart with classic Lincoln design cues, but it seems to come across as a bit too mismatched. Lincoln’s new corporate face is a given for the new concept, but the combination of a low beltline and high roof gives the C Concept a greenhouse look – especially in person.

That being said, the C Concept is a good indication that Lincoln is at least moving in the right direction. For the past few years BMW’s MINI has been the only premium small car on that market, but that could be changing in the near future with a production version of the C Concept.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?

I can’t believe this exists. But if they tone the grille down this could actually be kind of cool. The rear end reminds me of those old trunks, like way back in the day, I don’t remember the proper term for it but it was featured on Cadillacs, Lincolns, etc. which came after the separate trunk but it still kind of had a hump on it.

But the front end needs a smaller grille. And catwalks! No, that’s a bit much.

I say this its refreshing to think of a smaller Lincoln. I think what Lincoln is dying for is a two seat sports coupe. If Mercury came back with a New Version of the 1967 Mercury Cougar then that is the direction Mercury should head in.

So, how is it that something the size of the large and in charge Mazda3 compete with the Mini.. does it just compete on price point?

I don’t think people buy Minis based on price point, since they’re just not a good value proposition.

I am glad to see that Lincoln is thinking outside the box of a large traditional type luxury sedan. The time is right for a well equipped upscale small car in America. I don’t particularly like the rear hatch. Hopefully they will change that if they decide to put this into production. & if they do it will be on my list of cars to test drive when it is available to the public.

I think the “concept” of a luxury small car is pretty cool myself. Just because I want better gas mileage doesn’t mean I want to sacrifice comfort and techno-goodies.

However, I agree with most that the backend needs to go. I mean, I get what they want to pull off but it doesn’t work for that car. However the rest of the vehicle doesn’t look too bad. I have seen worse.

Lincoln is attempting brand unity by designing cars with the same grille theme, and it like that. It’s an acquired taste, but it’s better than the bland Chevrolet & Buick grille themes now.

I actually really like this C. The design is quite nice. Mind you don’t pay attention to the current application of the headlamps or tail lamps, and look at the entire design in itself. Since it is a concept they want us to see that the Lincoln branding without a question, hence the large ass grills and hugemongous tail light. The lines are already there, they just need to do some overlays and finish to perfection.

The Cadillac Cimarron was an acquired taste, and so is this. LOL

I can’t honestly say something like this won’t be produced, because Ford has the ability to build more cars off the new Focus/Mazda3 platform and not cost them much. I’d probably expect a premium model eventually after Volvo is sold off. If Mercury is still around, I’d expect them to get it since the Tracer and Cougar they have lacked a smaller car at the Linc-Merc dealerships.

Hey, what was ever wrong with the Tracer? When I was growing up, my parents had those and Escorts because we couldn’t afford bigger cars and the Tracer didn’t cost much more but gave people a little bit of choice to the Escort, and it didn’t cost Ford much to produce it.

There is nothing wrong with brand engineering models, like the Fusion and Milan, Milan doesn’t cost any more, but if you don’t like the Fusions front or rear design but like the overall package, you can get the Milan! I almost did.

01/12, 6:59 PM

JakeK….

because of people like you that’s why they don’t make attractive cars nor give a real difference between Ford and Mercury. Eventually someone suffers and Mercury is it.

Little bit of a choice….

HA HA…. what is there to choose? It’s the same damn thing!!!! Ridiculous u r

Actually all Mercury products cost more than Fords to cover the cost of making new front and rear clips and interiors, etc. If you were a fool to fall for a Mercury Tracer cause you thought it was “better” then you are not a educated shopper.

Only difference between a Milan and a Fusion is the tail and headlights! WOW that makes it really worth it.

No wonder GM ran their self into the ground. Look at them now… begging for money. Ford was begging too but changed their minds. But they were begging for awhile so that tells you they either they were being greedy for money or really did not need it. I said they were being greedy for a safety net.

Anyway…. u can have your Tracer.

I knew this day would come.. no Sable or Mountaineer replacements, Mariner and Grand Marquis on their last legs, and the Milan restyle is virtually indistinguishable from the current model. In fact, the only future product confirmed by Mercury is a Focus-based “upscale compact vehicle” sourced from Mexico.

My guess is this concept previews that vehicle.. the new Lincoln MCY (Mercury).

I think this might be a Mercury cruiser too. However, Mercury Seriously needs to bring back the sexy 1967 Cougar modernize with the same flowing lines of the original with the Hidden Headlamps. Give it say 750 HP and all wheel drive. Give the GT-R V Spec owner something to think about when he pulls up to the light next to ya!

Lincoln seriously needs first a Production sports couple. Its absolutely dying for one. You can’t be a serious Luxury automobile maker and not have one. Lexus and Mercedes I rest my case. The others are just pretenders to the thrown!

I love the thought of ecoboost.

I can definitely see the Mazda 3 platform underneath the skin. It is a good start but too bulky. Lincolns direction seems to be taking on the appearance of mass these days. The MKS is a large bodied car. Bigger is not always better. Especially when it starts to look bulky.

Good start Lincoln just slim down the nose.

Doesn’t surprise me most people don’t like this car. Most people drive Camrys and Accords, watch American Idol, and drink Bud Light. So, no harm done if it doesn’t roll with the “it better be generic” crowd. You guys probably salivate over the G8’s design. The C is about refinement. The shape is efficient. It doesn’t need scoops, bulges, sharp creases, etc. to exude athleticism. I’d compare the C to the hottie at the park that glides by in her black tights on a cold morning run. Lithe, lean, muscular, but not overly so, athletic, attractive, but from the basic human form, not from affectations. G8 designs are like pole dancers or body builders. Brutish and overt, and with a bunch of chemical or surgical help. And they age a whole lot worse.

I’ll take the C. Damn she’s fine.

Man this car is gorgeous. I think the people that are down-playing this car aren’t looking at it in light of its competition. Let’s create a brief list of its competition:

Competition—> Does it look better?
———————————————-
Mini Cooper –> Much Better
Mazda3 Hatchback –> Much Better
Honda Fit –> Much Better
VW Beetle –> Much Better
Volvo C30 –> Slightly
Toyota Matrix –> Wayy Better
Audi A3 –> Slightly
VW GTI –> Yes

The same people that think this car is ugly, are the same people that think the competing cars are design catastrophes.

And if it was a regular hatchback in the back it would like a mini size Venza or some other gay crossover. Lincoln, this is a home run, a design extraordinaire…The typical Lincoln owners and big car zealots have plenty of other choices to choose from.

Anti-Believer- I ‘d agree with Jake6. For a little bit of a premium, you get a few extra options and a little bit different car. Badge engineering has nothing to do with ugly cars. Bad designers make bad rebadges (thats a mouthful).

Not a big deal, just a bit more choice.

rix200ss- Compared to full size Lincolns of the past, the MKS is actually fairly small. Compared to other vehicles in it’s segment it’s not that big either.
