Lincoln, Ford's luxury brand, wants to tap the platform that will underpin the 2015 Ford Mustang for a rear-wheel drive sedan of its own. The highly redesigned underpinnings will get an independent rear suspension - a first for a mass production Mustang - along with MacPherson front suspension.

Lincoln also seeks some of the Mustang's larger underbody stampings, Car and Driver learned. Such a platform and/or product would let Lincoln better compete with Cadillac and other luxury brands. The car would likely fill the entry-level void in Lincoln's lineup, where Cadillac's upcoming ATS, Infiniti's recently dropped G25, Lexus' IS250, and others do battle.

The resulting Lincoln could fit in under the MKS, which is basically a dressed up and reskinned Ford Taurus. It could also be made into a larger, flagship vehicle to battle the likes of the largest premium sedans, though this is a stretch in more ways than one. The most likely scenario would involve the new sedan competing with mid-size cars such as the BMW 5-series and Cadillac CTS.
