Looking to transform itself into a serious player in the luxury segment, Ford’s Lincoln division will reportedly unveil a concept version of its next-generation MKZ sedan at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show this January.
Lincoln is keeping tight-lipped about the next-generation of the MKZ, but insiders have revealed to Car and Driver that car will follow an evolutionary design path. Overall, the next MKZ is expected to bear a stronger family resemblance to its bigger brother, the Lincoln MKS.
The 2013 MKZ will switch to a global platform that will also underpin the U.S.-market Ford Fusion and the Euro-spec Ford Mondeo. The next MKZ is expected to arrive with a wide variety of powertrain options, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, a more powerful V6 and a fuel-sipping hybrid. All-wheel drive is expected to remain on the MKZ’ option list.
The MKZ could prove to be Lincoln’s most important launch of the last several years as the brand desperately needs a volume vehicle that appeals to a new demographic. It remains to be seen if the new MKZ will fill those very large shoes, but we’ll only have to wait four months before we have out first indication.
