LA Live: Chevrolet's Camaro ZL1 goes topless in LA

Chevrolet's 2013 Camaro ZL1 convertible has taken to the LA show stage.

Winter may be fast approaching, but Chevrolet has unveiled its 2013 Camaro ZL1 convertible under the sunny southern California skies.

Set to follow on the heels of the Camaro ZL1 coupe, the convertible variant will arrive in Chevy dealerships near the end of 2012. For those that can't wait a full year to put a ZL1 in their garage, the Camaro ZL1 coupe will be available during the first part of 2012.

Like its fixed-roof counterpart, the ZL1 convertible uses a 580-horsepower version of Chevy's supercharged 6.2L LSA engine. Chevrolet is quick to point out that the ZL1's horsepower tally is better than high-dollar sports cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo S and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

"The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable, convertibles available at any price," said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. "This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top - or hit the gas."

The Camaro ZL1 coupe recently lapped the Nurburgring in 7:41.27, and the convertible version shouldn't be too far off that pace. Chevy went to great lengths to reinforce the car's chassis and promises "nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities of the Camaro ZL1 coupe."
