Long running British show “Fifth Gear” headed to the crusher

10/19/2009, 3:14 PM

By Mark Kleis

It was nearly a decade ago that car enthusiasts around the world were shocked to see the BBC cut Top Gear from its lineup, and it was then that Fifth Gear was born. Fifth Gear was originally intended to be a no frills alternative to Top Gear – focused more on the delivery of automotive comparison and review.

Over the years Top Gear reasserted itself as the benchmark by which all automotive review television shows were to be measured. Great personalities from the likes of host personality Jeremy Clarkson, and his sidekicks James and Richard kept viewers coming back for laughs, entertainment, and the occasionally the actual review of the automobiles themselves.

By contrast, Fifth Gear stayed true to its roots as a no-nonsense show focused on truly testing and reviewing cars and sharing their findings with the audience. If you wanted to relax and be entertained, then Top Gear may be your calling. But if it is a straight-to-the-point, fact based comparison of automotive competitors you wanted, then Fifth Gear was the show for you.

Now, after a sixteen season run it appears as if Fifth Gear’s failure to reach the top thirty programs on the network may have finally sealed its fate. In reply to an e-mail from AUSmotive.com’s editor, Channel Five stated, “Five is proud of Fifth Gear’s contribution to the channel but after 16 series, feels it’s time to try something new.”

At this time there is no official word on whether or not the “new” program will feature either Jason Plato or Tiff Needell, both revered for their undeniable abilities behind the wheel.

Damnit. Tiff inspires the hell outa’ me. Maybe he’ll be the next The Stig. Anyhow, speaking of insperation, American telivision producers need to get some and apply it towards filling the all too necessary hole we have over here with similar programs!

Top gear is the best, but I also enjoyed 5th gear. I agree, we need a show like this over here, or at least show it on a popular channel!

@MARK KLEIS

The show has not been running for 16 years. It was first aired in 2002.

After the BBC cancelled Top Gear in 2001 several of its presenters (Tiff, Vicky and Quentin) decided to start a new show in Channel 5 called 5th Gear.

I like Fifth Gear but I always thought that it’s overshadowed by Top Gear, but it’s still sad to see them go as I always liked Tiff and Jason’s face-offs because it was shown with two racecar drivers and not two middle-aged idiots. I actually think that Tiff and Jason should become presenters for Top Gear. Maybe Vicki could also become a presenter even though Hammond said that “A female presenter would be disastrous”.
Fifth Gear had many presenters so why can’t Top Gear.

I used to enjoyed Fifth Gear, until recently. It was definitely overshadowed by Top Gear, but they ruined the show just before it finished. Season 10, bringing on terrible presenters like Tim Lovejoy, trying to imitate Top Gear but not being half as amusing and very distasteful. Sad to see it go, but I saw it coming.

Fifth Gear never did as well because it is a REAL car show. Top Gear is more of an entertainment/comedy hour then a true car show. Don’t get me wrong, I love Top Gear…I have had many good laughs while watching…but Fifth Gear actually focuses on intelligently reviewing sports cars without the Top Gear bias or comedy. Fifth Gear is for the real gear-heads, and Top Gear is for everyone else. That being said Fifth Gear have had a few light-heated skits themselves, so I am speaking about the majority of the stuff of the respective shows…

Unfortunately I don’t think the US can successfully duplicate either car show. Have you seen what passes as TV shows these days? Sheesh.

I have never seen Fifth Gear but I have heard it was a good alternative to Top Gear. Although I do watch a lot of Top Gear, I enjoy that show! It is a unique way of showcasing cars, with relevant information and doing some cool challenges. I remember the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 against a fighter jet was awesome! I wish that our producers in America would have this type of show. To me Top Gear is the best show for automobile enthusiasts. I also believe that there was a U.S Top Gear, here is the link:

I did not even know it was running on NBC.

I enjoyed watching fifth gear when I was in the UK (and sometimes could find it on satellite). Too bad — Top Gear may be the more famous of the two … but I enjoyed it for what it was worth.

How come the US can’t produce a TV show nearly as good as fifth gear? (The US isn’t even close to making something as entertaining as Top Gear …)

Its crazy because you’d think I’d prefer Fifth Gear over Top Gear but you just can’t get around the fact that Top Gears entertainment value is just superior in comparison. Plus the higher budget helps, some of the cinematography is just the best in a car show I’ve ever seen.

MotorWeek is watching the Titanic sink …………over and over again.

They have GOT to change, their reviews are decent, put if you can’t deliver in a fun and
more “alive” way – then please go away ……..it’s been on for way too long.

It can be difficult, but its good to watch anything car related outside of of live sporting venues we dont necessarily wanna see(Fast and Furious, Motorweek, hybrid Prius commercials etc.) because thats the only way America could obtain awesome car shows like Top Gear. Once producers and the studios they are invoved with see that America is tuning in more often to automobile programs they will fill us with more of what we want to watch. I personally like Motorweek, one, because thats about all we got, and two, thier test drivers come from legitamate backgrounds and pick off skillfull test runs which have surprized me with stats I didnt think could happen. So if we can grin and bear it from time to time we all could invoke a positive albeit slow process.

Comp.mode, unless you have a Nielsen box, we don’t care what you’re watching. Sorry, but we only care what the people with boxes watch.

So if you have a box, watch car shows.

Actually, I’m not supposed to say anything at all about that, so please ignore my comment…

Why would a group of around 100 or more people care what I watch? Of course. Yeah I watch car shows, but I watch them from a very large very thin box.

Actually, I’m not supposed to reply to this post. This is an automotive website, so please ignore this worthless subject matter.

By the way, I don’t work for Nielsen Media Research. I work for one of their clients, and WE care what people with Nielsen boxes watch.

I’m going to try to pitch a car show, though, so watch car shows.

Thats sucks. TG is my fav but 5th Gear was a nice alternative. Though that Lovejoy clown was a pointless addition, Tiff, Jason and Vicky (you have to love a girl that can drive like that) and even Tom are good presenters.

But it doesnt sound like we wont see them again, just a new show so it might turn out to be a good thing.

The episode with Girls Aloud was one of the best ones entertainment wise..good lord Nadine and that accent!

I’ll miss watching Tiff rip it up at the track. Top Gear was always more entertaining, but it’s annoying watching them complain about every little detail that no one else notices. That and the stig is the only one who can drive…when he feels like it that is. (He’s crap without launch control off the line)

10/21, 8:51 PM

That is sad. 5th Gear is FAR better than Top Gear. Mainly because it lacked the bias of TG, had smart hosts, the hosts could drive great, and they reviewed cars good. Top Gear was just good entertainment throwing in some cars. 5th gear definitely has the better reviews.

10/21, 8:53 PM

And the female host, Vicky, on 5th Gear can drive better than any host on Top Gear.

5th Gear just needed a track to test ever car on like Top Gear did. That is basically the only reason I watch Top Gear.

Watching Fifth Gear was like watching Motorweek. The guys at Motortrend and Autocar does a better job of reviewing cars. I absolutely hated watching Tiff and Jason always drifting the cars around the bends. Tiff is a legend and I will always respect him. The problem was that there was no polarizing details about the reviews like, what they absolutely hated or absolutely loved about the cars. No drama at alll.

10/21, 9:28 PM

I agree with BIG-KC. Fifth Gear needed to be consistent with their track testing. All cars should’ve had an equal playing field as to how well their cars drove. I can trust a word of mouth about how good it is until I see some numbers and figures.
