Renton--I think I may have discussed the S2000 motor in an Atom idea with one of my friends, although I'm not sure that it would actually work. The main reason being--and I'm not a mechanical expert, so I don't really know if this is true or not, but...--I've been told the cranks on most Honda motors turn in the opposite direction of almost every other motor made by any other manufacturer on the planet. This is primarily true of Honda's front-wheel drive cars (read: almost every Honda in existence). So, the S2K motor is one of the exceptions to this rule, which is why it has been swapped into other, non-Honda cars (the one that comes to mind for me is an AE86 Corolla GT-S). Initially, that sounds like a good thing, because you'd assume that you could then put the S2000 motor into anything, except perhaps most any other Honda or any other car setup to use a standard Honda motor... like the Atom. Although now that I think about it, there's probably a way that this could be fixed, especially since I think I've seen a Prelude with an S2000 motor. Maybe it's possible to just mount the engine backwards in the Atom... and all that being said, the S2K motor would probably work quite well in the Exige. Although I've heard that one of the main reasons Lotus picked the Toyota motor has to do with it's powerband, which would obviously be very different in the S2000 motor. It's also possible that I have no idea what I'm saying here...

doublearon21--imageWIS caught that I was essentially paraphrasing Clarkson. I'm pretty sure it was a joke of sorts on his part. I've actually heard the material referred to as a "paper-honeycomb sandwich" on bmwworld.com. I never assumed it was like the corrugated cardboard from a filing box, but more of a paper-based substance that one might find on a space ship. that being said, if you've seen the car--which i have not--and say it's carbon fibre, i'm not going to argue with that.

amanda--I must absolutely take issue with your classification of TVR as a kit car company. what exactly are the kit components in a TVR? I mean, TVRs are definitely love-'em-or-hate-'em cars, but they are pretty much completely original. As far as I know they develop all of the components on their own and only sell the vehicles in their fully assembled form, so I don't see anything "kit" about that.

I'll begrudingly give you everyone else. Although I'm kind of curious as to what is and what is not a kit car. The Exige, for instance, uses a Toyota engine, but everything else is Lotus. The Ariel Atom uses a Honda engine, but everything else is Ariel. The Noble uses the engine from the Mondeo, but everything else is built by Noble. While the Noble can, in some bizarre technical sense for legal purposes, be bought as a kit, it's also purchased as a complete car. The Exige, and even the Atom, I believe, are both sold only as complete cars. If we call these cars kit cars, then we'd have to call a good number of the cars being sold today by various manufacturers kit cars. The Pontiac Vibe is a kit Toyota Matrix; the Ford Fusion is a kit Mazda6; the new Audi S8 is a kit Lamborghini Gallardo; most of Chevy's small cars are kit Daewoos; the Maserati MC12 is a kit Ferrari Enzo; the Pontiac GTO is a kit Holden Monaro, which is itself a kit of the Chevrolet Corvette; and everything built on Chrysler's LX platform--300, Magnum, Charger--are kit E-Classes, and in some cases, kit Dodge Rams; the Koenigsegg is probably still a kit Ford; oh, and the Saleen S7 is definitely a kit car.

anybody have thoughts on what qualifies as a kit car?

Amanda, the S2 Elise/Exige is far from a "typical British kit car" (which, I agree, totally suck). It's constructed extremely well using modern technology. They do NOT smell like glue. They do NOT fall apart (at least as bad as the S1). If they feel cheap, it's because the car is very small and very light. I've driven both a Cayman S and a standard Elise, and the Lotus is the better sports car -- hands down. The steering is so fantastic and the chassis so responsive, that every other car (including a Cayman) feels like there's a two-second lag between driver input and the car's response. Which one would I rather live with everyday? Cayman, for sure, but don't shit all over the Lotus until you drive one.

Come on, Lotus is just another UK glorified kit-car assembler, like TVR and Marcos. Think tinny gear-shifts that look like they will break off in your hand. Think laughable shut-lines [that came out as shit-lines, maybe I should have let it stay....]. Think smell of glue. You could get a Cayman S that will still look brand-new when this POS is falling apart around you.

Jeremy Clarkson was the one that stated on Top Gear that the trunk liner of the M3 CSL was made out of cardboard…personally I don’t know if its true or not, however I do know that people need to stop comparing every damn car to the 335i, especially seeing BMW’s recent quality problems when it comes to their electronics (just ask any owner of a new 5-Series). The Elise / Exige is the best value for a everyday car that can be track-raced in the world.

Okay, enough of the idiots posting, Amanda, you're the biggest, you probably saw an elise that got hit or something, because several people in my neighborhood and my best friend own elises, all flawless bodywork. My guess is you never sat in one or driven one because if you have you wouldn't say any of what you said. It is one of the most solid cars out there, the chassis does not flex at all not matter how hard you beat on the thing. People who don't know what they're talking about should be shot, 57k for a car that will destroy anything on the track is a bargain, anyone who says otherwise is to broke to afford it and therefore does not have a valid opinion and should not post. I'm sure I'm pissing several people off right now but I've been posting on leftlane for awhile now and i'm sick of the idiots. and yes for the same price you could have a fully loaded 335, thats like comparing apples and oranges. Nowei you're cool, you know what you're talking about, except for the CSL thing the trunk floor isn't cardboard(maybe that was a joke), saw one at a track in Europe and asked the owner a million questions and looked the car over inside and out, the actual trunk is CF. Anyway 57k for an amazing machine, can't wait till it stateside.

In the first batch of non-supercharged Exiges brought here the roof scoop didn't do anything except feed cooler air onto the top of the engine.

The Euro and now (yippe!) US supercharged models draw intake air from the roof scoop.

BTW I think most folks buying this car will able to have a 335i AND and an Exige.

Comparisons to Westfields and Atoms are OK, but those cars are even more impractical than the Exige. Consider this is the only 2000lb road car with a roof in the US. (I'm not counting kit cars, only new I-can-walk-into-a-dealership-and-drive-it-away models).

Can people please stop comparing the damn 335i to every other car in a similar price range? A 4-seater coupe is not comparable to a 2-seater coupe / convertible (Audi TT) or a road / track-day car (Lotus Elise / Exige). What’s so difficult about that, which some people cannot seem to understand?

nowei -- I absolutely love the Ariel Atom. Even though I have never seen it in person. I would love to see a comparo of the Exige S against the Atom and throw in a top Caterham and Westfield as well.

Any of these cars with the Honda S2000 motorwill do very well. That engine dominates.

This is a quite sophisticated car, and I wonder if it'll fit in the american market.

I've had the opportunity to drive it and, yes, it's a harsh and rough and tough ride and it's sooooo cool, and honestly I don't really think it needs a supercharger or a turbo, unless, of course you want to take it to the racetrack and race it for real.

A) Has Lotus even built the Europa yet?

B) It's not so much the individual weight savings of the electric windows and carpets and so on, but the sum total of all of those weight savings. It's kind of analagous to the options list for a car. the options might not seem very expensive individually, but when you add them all up... yikes.

C) Do we know for sure the roof scoop does nothing? because the Exige, like all Lotuses (Loti?), is mid-engined. Therefore the scoop is actually well positioned to cool the engine. Given the observation regarding weight savings, i'd say the smart money is on a functional scoop.

D) BMW, which is really getting talked up in this particular thread, did build a car out of cardboard. The trunk floor in the M3 CSL, which was only sold in europe, was made out of cardboard in an effort to save weight

E) The Atom and the Westfield would most definitely spank the Exige. You can get a supercharged version of the Atom that does 0-60 in 2.9, plus it's significantly lighter, etc. I'm getting the Westfield confused at the moment, but if I'm remembering correctly it's either the Atom with an electric engine, and I've seen video of this beating a Carrera GT in a drag race, or it's another car that ran around the Top Gear test track quicker than either the Enzo or the Zonda F, whatever happened to be on the top of the board. Personally, I think I'd rather have the Atom than the Exige. They basically serve the same function, but the Atom is just cooler... in my opinion.

F) Considering the engine is more than likely a Toyota engine--the one used in the MR-2S, among other things, I believe--I'm sure there's a slough of aftermarket parts available for it. The Atom's got a Honda VTEC, so there would be even more parts for it.

Love the trolls here. Utility??? Would you buy a Ferrari or Porsche for the utility? For that you get a stationwagon or these big things called SUVs.
Amanda: Yes, leaving off the power-windows and carpet help the 0-60 time. Consult a physics textbook, the chapter on Newtonian mechanics: Acceleration = Force / Mass. Every little bit adds up, even those "love-handles" on the driver's arse.
I've seen quite a number of these used as daily drivers. You may not get a cup-holder, but judging by the grins on the driver's faces, they don't seem to mind. And if you'd rather have a more traditional alternative, for the same money the Chevy Corvette is a perfectly good car with more interior space. Choice is a good thing.

Ever try try to get in one of those? As great as they are, the novelty runs out pretty quick. The door sill is like, a foot wide.

Would much rather see the Europa come here.

The Exige S will be a track darling no doubt...... I hope the extra grunt helps, my freind is a PCA instructor and says that those Lotus Elises get destroyed in the straights. They just do not have the juice.

$57K for something that is built like a bad kit-car? Give me a break. I saw an almost brand-new elise with fiberglass so bad you could watch it disintegrating. These things make cars built in China look good. Of course a car will be fast if you make it light enough. Make it out of cardboard and it will be even faster. And then all that pretentious crap about how wind-up windows save weight and make your car go faster. They leave out carpets too -- I bet that really helps the 0-60 time. By the way, the air scoop on top is just for show -- it doesn't cool anything. Your ripoff-o-meter should be going right off the scale about now.....

Performance figures are one thing, but feel is another entirely. The Exige S has the most astonishing, almost telepathic handling and revels in being pushed to a degree that will have the 335i sweating. TBH you don't buy an Exige as a daily driver unless you're extremely hardcore as they're not easy to live with, but as a trackday tool or a weekend toy there's nothing this side of the top end Westfields, Caterhams and maybe the Atom that will touch them.

Half a second is a lot...

And the Exige S will drive in circles around the 335i!

Plus when you buy this car, you don't need it for utility. 56K for the performance is fine IMO.

When I go to AutoCross events, the Lotus cars just tear it up and usually post the best times (of the non-F1-like cars.). That being said, $56k seems like a lot. How much is the BMW 335i? isn't that like much cheaper, just a half second slower, and gives you more utility?

I know, the Exige is for the track and not for everday. I'd get one for sure!! But, it just seems expensive to me.
