Spied: Lotus supercar

Spy photographers have spotted Lotus‘ upcoming supercar hiding under a protective cover. Although details on Lotus’ newest supercar remain scarce — our sources simply refer to the car as “THE Supercar” — it is believed that it will be powered by a Jaguar-sourced V8 with around 420 horsepower.

Power is expected to be sent through a Volkswagen gearbox and Lotus is said to be developing the car’s active suspension.

Is Lotus still an independent or are they owned by one of the bigger fish?

Well, you CAN see a bit of the front fender crease. As Swerve mentioned, it’s like a strip-tease.

Having become more and more interested in purchasing a used Elise, this one could keep me saving for a few more years.

Unless the car only weighs like 2000 lb, I don’t see 420HP being enough for “THE” supercar.!?

well just because v8 produces 420 hp, it doesn’t mean they won’t supercharge or turbocharge it, it definitely has the shape of a supercar, man those are some wide fenders :)

Yeah I was wondering about it only have 420hp. But gumby is right. That doesn’t mean that it won’t be S/C’d or T/C’d. Cant wait though!

Except for the fact that Jaguar has a 4.2L V8 supercharged that is good for 420HP in the XKR.

Since Lotus has been supercharging 4 cylinders like mad, a 400 hp V-8 might be “super” to them, but probably not “supercar”-esque. The Espirit, I suppose, was a nice car, but not a supercar by any stretch.

Still, I can’t wait to see it.

johnnyc: Lotus is owned by Proton, a Malaysian car company. They’ve owned them for a while, but you never really hear about Proton’s influence, so I think the important shots have always been called in the UK.

“Jaguar sourced”? Am I missing something here? Jaguar has no engines that aren’t shared with the rest of the Ford universe. This is also the hemoraghing appendage Ford’s about to hack off to save the rest of the corporation. And then hook it into a VW gearbox??? So Lotus is going to source a custom bellhousing for a drivetrain built from two disparate manufacturers.
Somehow I think someone’s speaking out his a$$

i like it too cts driver, from what i can tell, the front looks like an R8 while the rear reminds me of a gallardo, but one thing’s for sure it definetly mid-engined.

Global_Lightning,
While it is true that Jaguars 4.2L V8 is shared with other Ford entities, it IS a Jaguar motor. It was engineered by Jaguar and is built in the UK. So when another company buys it, it is correct to call it “Jaguar-sourced”.

And, for as many problems as Jag has, engine design and reliability isn’t one of them. That 4.2L V8 is a favorite as a drop-in for the particularly well-heeled racing hobbyist. It’s not only the same motor that Land Rover uses extensively, but also the same motor that Aston Martin uses in the Vantage, though both companies obviously do some changes to suit their applications.
