Lotus to expand to India

12/12/2007, 8:39 AM

By Drew Johnson

With emerging markets buying more and more vehicles every year, it seems as though almost every automaker is looking to expand into new regions. Sports car makers are no exception — Aston Martin announced that it would be moving into China and now comes word that Lotus will be heading to India.

Although in the beginning stages of its move to India, Lotus is currently searching for a dealer network. The first vehicle planned for the Indian market will be a version of the Elise.

Lotus has seen recent success with expansion into Thailand and Mexico.

Lol jjt; ya I’m really not sure why Lotus is doing this but they must have the numbers backed up i guess. It is just beyond me how you could take a country like India where there are too many people (which means alot more poor people) and expect to sell an Elise or a car like it. I mean the Elise costs a little over 40k; how many people in Calcutta are gunna drop that haha.

Came back from India last week from new delhi. Saw more Porsche Cayannes in a day than what I see in bay area.
money is pouring out from every orifice, and thanks to weak dollar , the cars are cheaper

Interesting, but I live in Silicon Valley and I don’t even see an Elise every day so I don’t see how India is going to buy them up except from a lack of choices for sports cars.

True. Roads are terrible for most part. No wonder Cayannes are more popular than 911’s.
Actually , now I think I did not see even a single sports car.

Also, in silicon valley , the problem with elise is not how much it costs, its just that the looks of elise arent for everyone.

Ya too bad none of zo6 driving shmucks around this valley realize that on the twisties they would get pimp smacked by an Exige that costs 20k less and has half the horses (^_^)
