Lotus unveils 2007 Lotus APX Concept

Lotus today released official photos of the 7-seat Lotus APX Concept. “APX is not just a Lotus Engineering concept, but a feasible prototype close to production,” the company said in a statement. On the other hand, “it is not a concept indicating a strategic direction of Lotus Cars.” The car has a front-mounted 300 hp supercharged V6 gasoline engine. Weighing in at just 1570 kg and with a power to weight ratio of 191 hp per tonne, the APX has sportscar like performance of 5.4 seconds to 100 km/h (5.0 seconds to 60 mph) before reaching a top speed of 245 km/h (152 mph). Combined fuel consumption for APX is estimated to be 8.7 litres / 100 km (or 32 mpg).

The V6 engine is an example of extensive research into “engine downsizing by Lotus Engineering’s Powertrain Team. Engine downsizing is the concept of using advanced technologies to enable a small engine to produce the power and torque of a much larger engine, with the obvious reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.

The brief for Lotus Design was to create a visually arresting “ Jekyll and Hyde “ car that fulfilled the needs of practical and flexible everyday transport but also provided the enthusiast with a focused driving machine.

Russell Carr, Chief of Design for Lotus explains: “We saw the customer as a sportscar enthusiast who, with a typical family of 2 young children, occasionally wants to carry four or five adults in addition to their children. To facilitate this a third row of fold flat coupe style rear seats are accommodated within the cabin.”

Exterior

Russell Carr explains the exterior design philosophy: “We wanted the design to communicate the driving experience of the car, which is characterised by extreme power, performance and grip. Therefore the form language had to convey strength and velocity whilst looking planted to the road. As with all designs the essences of strength and movement are generated from stance and proportion which are, on this car, characterised by an extreme cab rearward, teardrop like silhouette and prominent wheel arches The illusion of speed is further communicated by a taught, fluid form language within which feature lines and surfaces stretch seamlessly from the penetrative nose to the boat – tail rear end. Power is re- enforced by a prominent hood line, similar to classic front engined sportscars, and flared arches, whilst strength is given by a deep bodyside and coupe style slim glasshouse.”

Interior

The brief for the interior of the car was to create an environment with the visual drama of a sportscar but with a high degree of functionality and a contemporary sense of luxury. Russell Carr explains further: “We started by working with the engineering group to optimise the driving position and major controls. Then we created memorable features and controls that combine intuitive function with a unique design and high quality materials. This is evident in the design of the HVAC control, the start button and instrument pack. The latter communicates the cars sporting personality through a distinctive sports bike look which mixes analogue and digital displays within a high quality aluminium casing. The digital screens of the instrument pack have multi-functionality enabling major data, including Satellite Navigation, to be placed logically in front of the driver. Great care was taken in developing the grains, textures and material finishes to ensure an ambience of sportiness and contemporary luxury.

Interesting rear hatch design.

visibility out of the rear looks to be a bit challenging. It looks like competition for the Subaru Legacy GT wagon, except from Lotus – so it will undoubtably be far more expensive, slightly faster and slightly more luxurious.

Why does lotus need a 7 seater.

APX? A??? I can’t remember a Lotus whose name didn’t begin with an ‘E’.

Anyway, this from Lotus is as bad as Porsche making an SUV. Oh wait…they did. Whats next, Ferrari?

Everything except the exterior styling looks awesome, but that styling is terrible.

On a different note, what happened to the Lotus emblem?

Looks like a Mazda 5 with a screwed up rear hatch. There’s nothing new under the sun.

What are Lotus thinking?? This goes against their entire company philosophy (powerful, light sports cars). I really hope they don’t consider building this thing.

if someone has a few kids, Lotus isnt really the first place theyd think of going to get a practical car. I like the styling though, but i can’t believe it does 0-60 in only 5.4 seconds. It looks too chunky for that.

Why don’t Lotus spend their money on a new Esprit? This car will probably resurface as a Proton, only without the 300bhp, hence no Lotus badge.

U all do know that Proton owns Lotus, Proton pumped in almost 1 billion Malaysian ringgit into this project. It will re surface as a Proton as malaysian markets lacks MPV form proton. But Malaysian wont want a 3L car, so we may see the downgraded 2.2L MPV wihout an Aluminum chasis as Proton …

So to answer why Lotus did an MPV, the answer is in the parent company …. except for the sports car, most of their other projects are motivated by proton’s needs!

Have to agree that’s its a Mazda from the front. The envelope-back won’t do it any favours and looks like midgets only in the back!

GOOD GOD PEOPLE! SAY IT AIN’T SO…NOT A LOTUS. I’VE SEEN THE DOWNFALL OF COMPANYS, AND I HOPE THIS IS NOT WHAT WE ARE SEEING – PROFITS OF GREAT FINANCIAL SUCCESS, FOLLOWED BY A TRAGIC COURSE OF EVENTS MISTAKEN FOR A BRIGHT IDEA.

Guys Im sure lotus would not dare do this to us alone, although something tells me this is more about these guys advertising thier capability to other manufacturers as an exersize in showing off thier skills in manufacture.. weve all got to eat! However I have to say I like the interior.. its BMW z8 all over.. and i do like some exterior design features but on the whole I have to say whats the preacticle point of this concept?a school run utility? (the ladies wont like the poor rear visibility and its looks to expensive for your modding.. just my 2cs

I think that this car is amazing and can survive in the selling of Lotus’ model. But, if possible, maybe Lotus can produce this car for Malaysian market. I see Lotus do not respect Proton as the owner and their parent. Lotus need to respect Malaysian because we all Asian people who the Europeans used to take over their land and their wealth, has take over the one of world most well known car producer. So, Europeans can’t deny the ability os Asians because I believe that Asian, if we united, can really beat up the Europeans and Americans. ASIA FOR ASIA!

Purrfect! for occasional 7-seater use. I would definitely buy if the design of upcoming 2009 launch Proton MPV would be base on it.
