Low-production V8 Challenger now looks likely

Since the introduction of the Dodge Challenger Concept, numerous reports have suggested different paths Chrysler could pursue in building a production version of the car. According to an Automotive News report today, the most likely scenario involves a limited-production vehicle priced above the Ford Mustang. The report indicates that the niche car will come V8 only. Interestingly, only 30 percent of the Mustangs Ford sold in 2005 had V8 engines. That fact, coupled with a higher price, would make the Challenger lower Volume than the ‘Stang. Chrysler marketing VP Joe Eberhardt said emotionally, Chrysler would like to built it “tomorrow,” but there are still a few issues to tackle. In terms of sustainability, Chrysler now believes a low-volume Challenger would be a good business case. However, actual production will still be hurdle of its own. While the car will be based on the 300C platform, Chrysler has no further capacity at its 300/Magnum/Charger facility. That means the car would have to be built elsewhere. Due to its low volume, however, a dedicated plant would not be needed.

Wtf 300c platform… wow what a waste of time why cant they bother to make a decent chasis for it so it will last a good 4-6 year run.. its gonna look sweet and way a **** tonne what a shame

What a beautiful car – it seems like it borrows lots from the 67 camaro, which I thought was the most awesome muscle car, and that’s ok, seeing as how Chevy has not done a great job of updating it. What a sweet car….

I won’t like it unless they make it in manual. Automatic muscle cars are dumb. If it has a manual option, it has a CHANCE against the Mustang.

It looks like it will have the 6.1L SRT-8 Motor (425 HP), and a Six Speed Stick, like the car shown at the Detroit Auto Show.

low volume and high price sucks. I tihnk alot of people would rather wait for a dedicated chassis, and higher production numbers, so it will be priced in compitition with the stang and the future camaro.

Well, not quite the 300C chassis. This is actually a SWB rendition of the LX, on the LY platform. This opens up quite a few opportunities for DCX, not just the Challenger. It’s a flexible platform.

Also, to those who think it weighs a lot, yes. Manufacturers aren’t making heavy vehicles for the hell of it, there are a lot of safety features and trickery going into modern vehicles. The only vehicles that can get away with light are convertibles, as they’re an entirely different set of safety specifications.

I think this is a mistake. The Challenger is a car that could SERIOUSLY compete with the Mustang and the upcoming Camaro, but they’re blowing that opportunity by making it high priced and low production. What is this car supposed to compete with? Now I’m afraid the only people buying it will be enthusiasts, which is nice for people like us, but IMHO very unwise of DCX. This is a missed financial opportunity, as I’m sure they would make money off of a lower priced, higher production car like the Mustang. Its also a missed opportunity to improve their image as a performance oriented brand, and a surefire way to lose the modern pony wars.

Heck, why not through Aston and BMW into the mix for full four seat performance cars.

I think the demand and the profit generated will cause DCX to start small and let them grow. They got gunshy ever since the Prowler did/didn’t sell.

Now if they would have re-introduced Plymouth as Smart and then built ten Challenger based Superbirds!!

I need to know the date when they open up the waitting list so I can be the first on it. I hope the aftermarket companys will have parts ready when they produce this car (super chargers, headers, exhaust systems, ext…).

WTF!! It’s not the Camaro concept!! It’s borrows from the 1970 Dodge Challenger. Nothing Camaro about it. Jeez!

Hell, sounds good to me…

Maybe with leather and 6 CD changer it’ll get up to 10K!!

Why doesn’t a chinese company come up with a car that looks that good anyway? Seriously, Gee-Lee could bang out a Solstice or a Mini Cooper type design, penned by a student in So-cal and sell a ton at Wal-mart.

Heck, I’d buy a Lotus looking clone for 1/4 the price!!

Here we go again. The Challenger is a great looking ride but i am not going to pay excessively for one. I’m sure they will sell but if the list price is $35,000 or above they can keep it, unless it runs high to mid 12s rite from the showroom floor. I think i’ll wait for the 2008/2009 Camaro. Reasonably priced Muscle is what we need not overpriced cars. Go Chevy/GM !!!!!

At least this car looks buildable. The Camaro concept is so far out of reality, by the time a real one bows, it’ll look about 75% of the concept. And you know GM will find a way to F up the new one. This car is a hit waiting to happen. Now it looks like we’ll get to prove it.

This motor in a 4794 pound Jeep runs 4.5sec to 60mph and 12sec flat to 100mph. I think this motor will do better in the coupe…

I just went to the NY Auto Show on saturday and the spokeswoman said the car does 0-60 in the low 4’s i believe and has a 13.0 s 1/4 time. I must say..i was a little skeptical on the design in the photos, but in person it is compeltely badass. It drew huge crowds at the show. BTW, there is only one actual version in existance: the same on at the show and the same one all the road testing was done on. I hope Dodge makes this a reality.

And yes it had a manual.

Low production = high cost, especially for a new design. I am sure Chrysler execs are squimish about fuel prices as they plan to loose half of there loyal
Mopar buying base (groupies) if gas climbs to $5-$6 a gallon buy the time the production Challenger hits the street. Maybe the plan is, if you can afford 35-40 K for weekend muscle then you can afford to fill the tank with liquid gold. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, and saving my pennies.

Make the challenger affordable offer the v6 like the mustang and colors other than the high impact ones and this should be a big hit for you guys , bet you will need more than 30,000 units.
