After favorable reactions from the auto show circuit, it seemed it would only be a matter of time before General Motors announced a production version of its Cadillac Converj concept. However, the most recent reports have indicated a production version of the Converj was quickly falling out of favor, with the project now looking officially dead.
Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that GM had cancelled the Converj project. Although GM never officially confirmed that report, those within GM indicated the project was on the rocks due to the added weight and technology that would be required to make the Converj perform up to Cadillac’s standards.

While we were still holding on to a sliver of hope that the Converj could eventually make production, the entire project now appears to be off the table. Via text message, GM chairman Bob Lutz confirmed the Converj was D.O.A., saying, “Simply, other priorities and the conviction that the Volt and Ampera will use all available capacity for years to come.”

Lutz is best-known for getting us excited about vehicles that sound great but never come to fruition – like the Zeta-based Chevrolet Impala – but the soon-to-be-retired exec has transformed into the bearer of bad news. While it’s no secret that production of the Chevy Volt will be extremely limited at launch, we were hoping there would be at least a little capacity for a stylish two-door like the Converj.
