A lot of automotive journalists these days say that if GM only had better products, it wouldn’t be faced with the financial situation it is in today. But GM Vice Chairman and spin-doctor Bob Lutz won’t hear any of it. “I can’t help but notice the perceptions and generalities I keep hearing about our cars and trucks, from pundits and public alike — even here on the blog,” he writes. “You often hear our products collectively criticized but individually praised, and it’s discouraging.” He says despite many positive reviews of the Chevy HHR, Buick Lucerne, and Pontiac Solstice — GM’s latest and greatest offerings — many “experts” and “observers” throw out blanked statements like “GM just doesn’t have any vehicles that people want.â€? Lutz hopes to dispel this perception by pointing to several areas where GM is doing well. He says the Lucerne is off to a good start, the Impala is one of GM’s best sellers, and the Cadillac DTS has outsold the BMW 5-series by 17 percent. He also says the Hummer H3 is “selling like crazy” and the Pontiac G6 is doing well ahead of next year’s hardtop-convertible launch.
