Lutz: New “design-driven” concept due in January

05/22/2006, 11:34 AM

By admin

In an interview published today, General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said the automaker has at least three major “design-driven” products under development. He said one such product will be shown as a concept at the Detroit auto show in January 2007. (At the 2006 show, GM unveiled the Camaro and Enclave concepts). Lutz said his role at GM has involved a push for products that weren’t necessarily “needed” in a practical sense. He listed the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Chevrolet HHR and Chevrolet Camaro as examples. “The look that we want is like a weightlifter in a tight T-shirt — where the clothes look too small for the physique,” he told Automotive News. “You’ll see a much stronger orientation toward the emotional side.” Lutz also stressed Buick and Pontiac are not on the chopping block. Last year, he described the brands as “damaged.” But that should not be interpreted as a death sentence, he said. “I never said irrevocably damaged or irreparably damaged or terminally damaged,” he said.

Sounds gay. Metrosexual, at best. Thank goodness for Dodge and Ford.

So Lutz is coming out of the closet? Gawd – wait ’till Pat Robertson get’s wind of this.. Nawh…them guys would have been sorted out durng Wife Swaping Night at the DYC before they ever got above the third floor.

Maybe he’s still stuck in the ’50’s where a pack of Luckys were rolled up in the sleeves of his t-shirts. Probably…

GM aint the only one’s getting their knees dirty. Seems to have been an awful lot of talk of Ford’s marketing towards that type too.

The original 65 Shelby Cobra 427 had a muscular, bulging look that, to me at least, doesn’t have any fairy overtones.

The folks who don’t like this kind of look, are you less than or older than 40 yrs old?

And why is a weightlifter in a tight t-shirt “gay?” I guess you guys are all boring, fat, and out of shape then, right?

Substitute “hype” for decent product and you have a winning formula at GM.

Let’s get on topic fellas. Personally, I’d love to see a concept version of the upcoming, RWD Chevrolet Impala, in SS guise. That’d be ruddy brilliant – and could also set a precedent for what Chevrolet’s would look in the future. It’s the smart option.

sh.yoon, it’s impossible for me to take anything you say seriously anymore, because a past post of yours where you said “GM doesn’t just rebadge cars anymore” is still fresh in my memory. But regarding GM…how about they start upping product quality before they go wild on designs, because no matter how “good” they THINK their new cars look, they won’t sell well and will develop a bad reputation if they are of low quality. which they undoubtadely will be, becaues GM still hasn’t figured out how to make a quality automobile

Mate, we’re not even talking about GM’s low quality – yes, their cars are pretty ****, but we’re not talking about that. We’re talking about this “new design” they will be debuting early next year. Like I said earlier, ‘let’s keep on topic’.

I’m not dying to see the next-gen GTO. After they ruined the last one they should just let it go. They obviously don’t know how to handle a car’s past to put it in the present any more.

So what this means is we will have more “metrosexual” turds coming out of the General in the future, or so Mr. Lutz hopes…

Because styling is what Gm’s biggest problem is at the moment… uh huh.

I think that if the GTO is to resurface, it needs to be just a left hand drive Holden. the Aussies sure do know how to make a powerful statement, both with engines and with styling. the Holden series are very very nice. And the Ford cars there are pretty impressive too. If they want to become more competetive in the U.S., they need to focus on what is already in their arsenal, and not try to reinvent something that gets done half-assed.

That Camaro he has come up with is butt Ugly. Why is it that Porche et al without the big financial resources that GM has can come up with much, much better styled cars???? Its a mystery to me. This camaro will fail as the SSR did and the new Buick with the exhaust portals like the 56 Buick had.
The Camaro will be a gas hog, and within 90 days they will be offering rebates. I have a 2000 Camaro .
