Lutz to speak at Auto Interiors Show

06/06/2006, 5:17 PM

By admin

General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz will kick off the 13th annual Auto Interiors Show tomorrow (June 7) at Cobo Center with a keynote address on the power of interiors to help rebuild an automotive brand. His talk on “Conquering Inner Space: Revitalize Your Brand by Refining Interior Design” will lead off two days of conferences and the trade show that highlights the importance of the interior and its many safety, styling and entertainment features to attract customers and build sales. The Leftlane Perspective: We know GM likes to tease its fans with new tidbits on future cars. Will Lutz preview anything tomorrow?

Shouldn’t someone from Audi be speaking on this?

WOW! That IS news! GM has finally figured out not to use plastic for everything…….at least for some vehicles. Sorry boys, but your interior is still inferior and has a LONG way to go to compete with Japan and Europe….and even Korea, and probably soon China.

yeah the grey plastic on the pontiacs, remember that? how did those designers get away with that for so long without anyone noticing how bad it looked?

My interior in my 72 GTO looks better than some new Pontiac. At least back then they actually use pretty decent soft plastics for the door panels, dash pads and seats.

I remember some GM cars from the late 80s/early 90s(Cutlass, Century something-or-other, Cavalier, etc.) that used stickers to label interior switches. And when I say stickers I mean the type that you can peel off and stick again. One of my favourite activities when confronted with rental cars with this particular feature was to peel the stickers and relocate them strategically to create the most confusion. Pretty antisocial, but it made feel better about being forced to drive a piece of ****.

And Lutz talking about interiors? Seriously? The best car Lutz has ever been involved with was the mk.1 Viper, and if you’ve ever seen the interior on one of those you it’s the last thing you want to talk about.

In interiors, Audi leads the way by a long shot. Unless you include pipe dreams in the form of Maybachs, Royces, Bentleys and the like.

To be fair, GM has improved their interiors seen on the recent Malibu, Tahoe, etc. However, this does not mean GM is anywhere close to their counterparts in Europe and Japan. Decades (80s, 90s, and early 2000s) have shown some idiotic interior forms, subpar materials, and “what-were-they-thinking” ingress/egress designs. You know everyone at this show is snickering in the background that the keynote speaker is from GM. Lutz better open with a joke or two to break the ice.

GM interiors are getting better ! Case in point, the ‘06 Impala has an interior that is way better than the one in my ‘05, and the ’06’s are on par with Honda and Toyota dash designs, which at times can be very fugly designs from the Japanese…….

#12 – not true. GM has many world class powertrains, and the interior design of new products is coming along very nicely. Get into any new GM product and experience it for yourself. The new LAMBDA models set to launch later this year have an outstanding interior design.

I’ll take my chances on a non-GM product thank you very much. I don’t settle for mediocrity when I am plunking down my hard earned dollars.

Lutz to speak about automotive interiors. Michael Jackson to speak about proper behavior around children. OJ to speak about controlling jealousy after a divorce. Bush to speak about being a good president… Oxymorons one and all.
