I just wouldn't pay it.

M3 Coupe marked up $30K by dealer
March10

sunshine1810: "For that much money I would look at other cars even other BMW's." good idea.

Need more oil for GM: "I wouldn't pay 10 bucks for this pile of crap." It's not a pile of crap.
"I can buy 5 Cobalt SS cars and run circles around this POS every day of the week if I want." That's just a dumb statement.
And yeah,the G8 is a real car!

Madcapp: "I'd rather have BOTH a 135i and a Challenger R/T for less money."
That's astute, but not all sedans suck.

SD650irag: "5 cobalts are necessary as only one will be running at at time." Only because you can only drive one at a time.

rlatimerc: "Need more oil for GM……are you seriously comparing a company that makes shit cars to BMW?" No,he's comparing Chevy to BMW ... and making an ass of himself at it.

RicardoHead: "Just pick up a standard 3 series for $37,000, stop off at Autozone and buy an M emblem for $12.99 and some new wheels for $1,200 and you'll get just as many ho's and still have $61,787 in your pocket when all is said and done."

That's some good economics there!

SS4LIFE: Your cavalier sounds a lot like mine (wrecked at 190K). But you should always value Driven's words over your experience.

Driven: "As I noted, they are stats for a vehicle purchased new in 2008 ..." That sounds theoretical, not factual. Hell,i predicted the Patsies would win the Super Bowl.

Heart64: "BMW is a nice car I've driven them before and you can't call them Trash ...."
and you prove that you are capableof writing with intelligence ather than just blind anger.

BMW is a nice car I've driven them before and you can't call them Trash SS or 400SS- couple of GM nerds. Listen I'm american too. Germans make excellent cars. In all honesty I think more of the BMW cars and the dealers that sell BMW automobiles than the typical drivers that owns one- not all but most. BMW owners are usually complete A##Holes. I did work with someone who owned a nice Porsche that I worked with that was nice. I think the German make excellent products so I don't know what your beefing about SS or 400Horse- your a couple of biase and mentally deficient american, In other words your bigoted toward anything that isn't american why?

Driven, leave the poor guy alone. Just because he doesn't understand or is not willing to look at the facts is no reason to rain on his parade. Leave him be to buy his car without knowing how much it really costs to own.

Correction, Edmunds TCO already factors in the warranty. They have calculated the average owner will be out of pocket $820 over 5 years on top of the warranty for repairs that aren't covered. The big thing that hurts that car is depreciation. It is one of the worst cars on the market for holding its value. Enjoy your FWD Cobalt experience. For the total cost it better be worth it.

Some people just dont get it. SS4Life, did you look at the links I posted? TCO includes averages for Depreciation, Financing, Insurance, Taxes & Fees, Fuel, Maintenance & Repairs. So your warranty will cover a whopping $820 in repairs of the $41,884 it will cost you to buy the car over 5 years & drive is 15k miles/yr. Believe whatever you want when buying the car. They say ignorance is bliss so you will be happy with the Cobalt since you weren't able to comprehend the TCO information.

Provide evidence the Edmunds TCO is grossly inaccurate (as you claim) and I'll tell you the Cobalt is a smart purchase. The things is you cant counter the numbers no matter what you believe is true in your brand loving mind. The numbers and the facts dont lie.

Well Driven when I pick up my 08 SS/TC in September I'll let you know how much money it's going to cost me. Also GM has this thing called a 5 year or 100,000 mile warranty?

Deanster, if you're going to hit paydirt, the last thing you should do is back up the dumptruck to a car dealership.

Responsibly speaking, of course.

Deanster, TCO = Total Cost of Ownership. It factors in repair costs, maintenance costs, fuel costs, etc; basically everything that goes into owning a vehicle. It supposed to represent the total amount you'll pay to say you drive a certain vehicle.

Between the Cayenne or SRT8, I'd buy the SRT8. You'll be down a bit on lux from the Cayenne, but the vehicle will last longer, benefits from economics of scale (parts are cheaper) and Chrysler is throwing rebates at vehicles. If you don't need the prestige, the Jeep will be less of a hassle to own.

Just because one dealer is asking $30k above MSRP doesnt mean it will sell. The M3 coupe starts in the 50s and only reaches 70k fully loaded.

SS4LIFE did you even look at the links or read Drivens information? You call him dumb and yet his links prove his information is correct. You should stick to commenting on what you know. Used Cavaliers and Jettas.

SS4LIFE, I am not writing about individual, unique experiences as like you are. I was just noting FACTs that can be verified at a reputable website. Go to Edmunds.com and look at the TCO part of the site. If the TCO part of the site is hard to understand read the story at the link I provided. I noted all the information you need to verify my numbers. Its not like I am pulling the information out of thin air like some here.

I wasn't listing the experience YOU had buying a 3 year old car and keeping it 5 years. As I noted, they are stats for a vehicle purchased new in 2008 using historical costs for repair, maintenance, depreciation, insurance over 5 years. Visit the Edmunds site if you still dont understand.
http://www.edmunds.com/new/2008/chevrolet/cobalt/100919275/cto.html?setzip=85260&vdp=off

You can quote your friends uncles mothers sisters experiences all you want. I'll still point you to a reputable site that has facts.

It WILL cost you approx $40k to own a 2008 Cobalt over 5 years. Look at the actual numbers and you will understand. Furthermore I compared the Cobalt to the 335 using the same TCO website and factored the percentages since they are in different classes. I did this so all numbers would be on an equal comparison level.

As for the question about how a $53K car gets to an MSRP of $70K, that's easy. All of the M3's on the ground are the same, sent by BMW without input from the individual dealers. They are all optioned out with the Premium package, Technology package, Cold Weather package, Sunshades, Ipod hook-up, Parking Sensors, and lots of other fun stuff that runs the price up pretty quick.

So all of these people saying they'd go buy a Z06 or a GTR instead for the price, take into account that a BMW is going to be much nicer and have much more amenities with similar speed, or you can throw that stuff out and get a much cheaper ride that is still incredibly fast.

Right Driven, just like my old used Chevy Cavalier that I bought that had 61,000 miles and was 3 years old when I bought it. After owning it for 5 years and over 100,000 miles later it cost me 50k to own??? That's the dumbest and most untrue statistic I've ever heard. Actually the only problem I had with it was that the motor mount had to be replaced, engine and trans are still going strong and it made a great hand me down to my brother who is still driving it 6 years later.

You want to hear something from experience though and I'll tell you this, my 05 SS/SC is doing just fine. I chose to lease because I like to have a new car ever 2 or 3 years so I won't have it anywhere near 5 years, and a good friend of mine who is the second owner of an 04 VW Jetta GLI 1.8T is trading his in for the 08 SS Turbocharged because after his extended warranty expired at 50k miles, he's spent $1200 within 6 months of it happening due to parts that have broken on him, talk about a great turnover on investment right???

I was using 2008 figures. I found this article from Edmunds from 2006 that uses the Cobalt as one of the worst cars to own. Unless you like throwing away money and driving a subpar vehicle.
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=110049
Only financially illiterate people would buy a Cobalt. Anyone that would want to own 5 of them is beyond comprehension.

Agreed, the RS5 will dominate but it will come at the end of the M3 life-cycle. Audi has bad timing when it comes to competing with the M line. Most dealers aren't like this CA dealer. Most dont go above MSRP although they aren't going below MSRP since they have long waiting lists for the new M3.

As for the laughable Cobalt people: The true-cost-to-own to true-market-value of a 2008 Cobalt is 93% over 5 years. The 2008 335 (no M3 data yet) is 42% over 5 years. That $22k Cobalt will actually cost the owner $42K over 5 years to own. Cobalts have some of the highest depreciation and above average operating costs according to Edmunds. Anyone that thinks a Cobalt is a good deal because the sales price is low is an idiot. Flushing $40k down the toilet over 5 years to own that piece of crap is foolish. This is all before factoring the resale price of the vehicles which, because of depreciation, makes the Cobalt an even worse deal.

How did this car's MSRP get to 70k?? I thought it started at 53.. I can't wait until Audi brings out the RS5 for the same price and dominates it

I'm with Fairlight on that. If you gotta have a bimmer, buy it as your hobby car and not a daily driver. It's called Bleed My Wallet because that's exactly what it'll do if you rely on it for transport.

Oh yes, and if you think that the cost of those repairs isn't built in to begin with, you are high, plus the reason BMW offers that is because of their reputation for having overpriced fussy repair histories to begin with.

30k plus for already a 70k M3??? Holy shit, 70k??? It's a great car no doubt (LP give me a break on this one) but you can find better performing ones for less than that. I don't happen to know any other car that you can get for that price that is as luxurious as it is performing but sheez... 70k lol when the 100% markup goes away on the GT-R or better yet I can walk over to a Chevy dealer right now and grab a ZO6 for the same or less I'll take either of those.

Well if you want a performance car to beat the piss out of, BMW will foot the maintenance bill for your M3. Comparing it to the Cobalt SS is stupid. The SS is a stupid fast compact, but the BMW is RWD, smaller and lighter (I think). Its like comparing a WRX to a Viper. I personally think BMWs ride like crap and have terrible interior room and ergonomics.

Fastest thing I've ever driven is a blown LS1 Trans Am (built as a drag strip car) pushing over 500hp at the wheels. I only wish I could say it was mine.

Of course, anyone who pays over sticker is stupid. I work as a photographer for local dealerships on California's Central Coast. I did three new M3's last week, all priced at sticker. Both dealerships have a company policy not to sell over sticker. Besides for $100K you could have an M5 or M6.

Then, Cobalt SS's over an M3? you're retarded. I took a coupe out on the road, and it was incredible. One of the fastest and most comfortable cars i've ever driven, and (through work) I've even driven Ferrari's, Aston Martins, and many many other sports cars.
