Mahindra TR: U.S.-bound pickup spied!

09/22/2009, 10:28 AM

By Mark Kleis

Our spy photographers have just grabbed the best images yet of Mahindra’s U.S.-bound pickup truck. Sitting on Mahindra’s Scorpion platform, we’ll be seeing 2-door and 4-door trucks in both two-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive versions arriving on our shores in early 2010. And a Mahindra SUV will follow about a year later – likely for the 2011 model year.

We’ve waited almost two years to catch a glimpse of the U.S.-spec Mahindra TR40 crew cab pickup you see in these pictures. The Indian-built diesel pickup has several refinements that set it apart from the rest of the Mahindra’s Scorpion-platform trucks sold overseas. The U.S. truck adds a front bumper guard — that’s similar to an aftermarket guard — as standard equipment, and a stamped-steel rear bumper. Both enhancements are needed to pass low-speed crash tests, which call for the front and rear bumpers to survive 2.5 mph direct and 1.5 mph corner impacts without damage. The trucks have standard stability control and four-wheel disc brakes.

Inside the TR40, you can see the 6-speed automatic transmission shifter that manages the 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine, and it comes with a manual setting. Official power numbers haven’t been released, but it is expected to produce between 140 and 150 horsepower, along with an impressive 300 lb.-ft of torque. The interior trim is very similar to the Australian version of the Mahindra, but is reportedly being developed exclusively for the American market. The center console between the seats includes three cupholders, power window controls and the four-wheel drive switchgear.

The small pickup will yield an impressive 2,600 pound payload capacity with the 7.5-foot cargo box – roughly a thousand pounds more than the Toyota Tacoma.

The Mahindra TR40 and two-door TR20 pickups are scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in February, under the production model name of Appalachian. Global Vehicles U.S.A., Mahindra’s U.S. distributor, says it has signed up 345 dealers nationwide. The starting price is expected to be from $20,000 to $25,000.

Expect a diesel-hybrid version of the truck to follow a year later, and with a few-thousand dollar premium to go along with it.

i like it. not cuz its good lookin but for the fact that it brings back what we no longer have any of…. rough & tough vehicles. sure we have strong cars & trucks. but where are the ones you can buy & just go muddin’ in or have fun with? suzuki samurai, the older jeep wranglers (the new ones are way too urban), Chevy Tracker, even the old Kia Sportage coupe-convertible SUV (circa 2000) was the last one of this genre i can remember. the truck however from mahindra is oogly— but ive seen the SUV on euro sites & it looks fun. much better than this. but i wanna already take one out and play with it.

PS – brilliant idea… since hyundai-kia is on a roll & giving us cars we want nowdays…. they should build us a small truck based SUV w/similar style to the Benz G-wagon (no… not copy it, just the same character) and sell it for bargain prices w/off-road capabilities in smaller #’s than say a Sportage…. i’d buy it— for sure.

It seems all out of proportion. The cab seems huge compared to the rest of the truck. I think it would be much nicer if the bulked up the front a bit and got rid of the 1970’s Ford Courier bed… Oh and don’t get me started on that back bumper. I’ve seen nicer homemade ones.

I’m sure there’s a market for this truck, but at that price it’s competing with the full size American trucks. Good luck.

they should get rid of the back doors for a longer bed. You can’t even fit a 6ft ladder in there without hanging it over the back. If they have a cover for the back it might be marginally usable for a work truck. Otherwise it’s a pickup that you can’t use as a pickup. How many compact cars have more cargo space with the seats folded down? Quite a few I think…….

Where did they hide all the exhaust and stuff compared to the last spy shots?

And why didn’t the “spy” turn to her right and get a picture of the back seats?

Starting at 20-25,000? I think these might have had a market at 15K-20K, but Americans don’t trust what they don’t know, and Mahindra is going to have a hard time proving itself here if no one is willing to risk 20K.

I’m all for diesel with a 6 speed, but I need a bed on my truck, not a fruit basket.

It looks hideous, out-of-proportion and too agricultural in nature to sustain a volume sales rate. I’d rather spend $25k on a slightly used Tacoma than buy this thing from an unknown foreign maker. But good luck to them.

Borat.. there should be a single cab configuration coming with a longer bed as well. Like everyone else has said, this is just too plain hideous and quite overpriced to sell. The only advantage is its diesel. And that can only go so far when you can get a (better) Ranger for so cheap.

this truck was not designed to look pretty and perform well. It was designed to be a replacement truck for all those old Toyota Tacoma/T100s you see running around from gardeners (atleast here in LA) and light duty construction. I do agree, they need to have a longer bed option and need to be around 15-20k

Man, I don’t even know where to start. Alright, that’s not true… The bed’s too short. The cab’s too tall. There are too many pillars and a useless wedge of a… a… what is that thing? A vent? Someone forgot to tell them (and Lincoln) that pickup truck grilles have horizontal louvres, not vertical ones. The hood’s too low. Who made that rack? DenverGuy, in his garage? And if you have to cut the cab for the wheel well, the wheelbase is too short. None of the cargo weight can be forward of the rear axle.

The Canadian’s right, but the size of the “eyeholes” you’d have to cut out for the headlights would sacrifice the stuctural integrity of the paper bag.

I’m not done yet, but I’ll keep it to myself.

On the other hand, it’s probably a very capable offroad vehicle…

My first reaction is “the pre-GM (pre-2002) Daewoo”. No, quite literally, especially the grill and interior reminds me of every pre-2002 Daewoo product (not just cars, also electronics) I’ve ever seen. And as a Daewoo owner I can tell you that interior has no chance in hell for the long haul. The exterior is ugh…different, but then again work trucks aren’t supposed to be pretty.

Wow….that Mahindra is a whole different kind of ugly that I never even knew existed. And isn’t that insignia on the steering wheel the same one that Oldsmobile switched to right before they went belly up?

An American car company stealing from an Indian car company. Sad.

Oh, and peaking of Oldsmobile, my dad and his best friend from work each bought brand new Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme’s in 1981. They were both “car guys” who knew how to care for a vehicle. Dad’s dropped two valves at 78,000 miles. His buddy actually had the crankshaft BREAK IN HALF on his at 44,000 miles.

Meanwhile, my four year old Hyundai Sonata gets beaten to hell by my wife. It will turn 100,000 miles next month, and has needed nothing but oil changes, tires and brakes.

Just sayin….. ;)

She ended up getting rid of it with only 60,000 miles due to a engine related problem that left them stranded on 4 different occasions. It was fun however trailering her Santa-Fe to the dealership behind my 02 Chevy Duramax which I kept for 99,000 trouble-free miles which was replaced by my current 08 Duramax with 21,000 trouble free miles. Just sayin!

This smells like a flop!

Others have said it. It’s a third world truck with what looks like third world quality and definitely a poor design, going for the same price that I could get a well equipped full sized truck or a nearly loaded mid-sized truck for. What does this have going for it? A diesel power plant and that’s about IT.

If they could make it look much nicer and cleaner and start around $15k, it would sell like hotcakes.

in all fairness, we dont know exactly how “loaded” it will be @ $20k. Of course if you have hand-crank windows, no radio, no ac, not much of anything really…except the car itself..it might be possible to get away for maybe $15-6k. Mind you a base model Ranger starts north of $17k and doesn’t have a cd player (only FM/AM).

When you buy a truck to be a truck, who cares what it looks like. It is an honest truck, with a diesel engine-with Colorado’s and Dakota’s only getting a paultry few more miles to the gallon than their big brothers, this combination sounds great. Manhindra has started making Willys Jeeps under license decades ago and are not new to this market segment. They are one of the largest industrial machinery companies in the world, knowing how to build dependable tractors can’t be all bad for a true truck manufacturer. John Deere is marketing a small tractor made in India, certainly a company that is not thought to be a low quality product. I have also read Manhindra is working on a diesel hybrid. I would be all over that one.

NMOFGM, I forgot to add I own a Silverado and while the drivetrain has been strong, I am sick of taking it back for lousy body assembly. The tailgait has been in 5 times for not closing and locking properly-this started the second day I owned it. The passenger seat was fixed 3x for moving in it’s tracks with acceleration and deceleration. The airconditioning blower constantly squeeks and drives everyone who rides in it nuts. I am American, bought American and am not impressed with buying American! About 12 days off have been messed up by taking this thing in for fixes with build problems that never should have happened and at least fixed the first trip in. The Colorado was designed by Isuzu, and GM bought Isuzu trucks and cars for years. The Chevy Aveo is a Daewoo, and the list goes on and on. The Saturn Vue had a Honda V6 for years. If your beloved GM can buy foreign products and peddle them as their own, why is it disloyal for the consumer to buy from the very companies they did. If buying a foreign product is an act of being disloyal to the U.S., G.M. has been one of the biggest offenders.

are you a freaking joke? a gm manufactured truck will get 500,000 miles on it? yes, with 2 rebuilt transmissions, 1 total engine overhaul, 2 rear ends and the a/c fixed 3 times. yes, a gm truck could make it to 500,000 miles.
have you ever driven a late model trailblazer? it feels like its about to break after 6 months. the last time i rented a trailblazer it had 11,000 miles on it. the bits and pieces in the interior were falling apart, and the rear end was making a clunking sound. it was a piece of crap. yes, it was a rental. but, with only 11k on it. i have rented nissan altima’s with 30k on them and they drove brand new. i have driven toyota 4runners with 130,000 miles that drove better then my friends gmc yukon with 22,000 miles.
500,000 miles is joke unless you enjoy spending about $10,000 keeping it running.

if this truck is reliable. it will sell very well. if it gets 30mpg, and many people are still upset about the bailout of the gm auto company.
