India’s Mahindra & Mahindra has decided not to place a bid for Ford ’s Jaguar and Land Rover brands. Mahindra made the decision because of uncertainty in the supply of powertrains from Ford once the deal was signed. The Indian automaker was also concerned about meeting stricter emissions regulations proposed by the European Union to start in 2012.
According to Automotive News, Mahindra was more interested in Land Rover — the automaker primarily makes SUVs and is looking for a premium brand in the segment — but Ford wants to bundle the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover. Ford has also announced that it will not hold future stakes in either company.
Mahindra’s rival, Tata Motors, is also considering purchasing the brands from Ford in a joint venture with Italian automaker Fiat.
