Mahindra decides not to bid on Jaguar, Land Rover

09/14/2007, 8:34 AM

By Drew Johnson

India’s Mahindra & Mahindra has decided not to place a bid for Ford’s Jaguar and Land Rover brands. Mahindra made the decision because of uncertainty in the supply of powertrains from Ford once the deal was signed. The Indian automaker was also concerned about meeting stricter emissions regulations proposed by the European Union to start in 2012.

According to Automotive News, Mahindra was more interested in Land Rover — the automaker primarily makes SUVs and is looking for a premium brand in the segment — but Ford wants to bundle the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover. Ford has also announced that it will not hold future stakes in either company.

Mahindra’s rival, Tata Motors, is also considering purchasing the brands from Ford in a joint venture with Italian automaker Fiat.

I hope they don’t become German like Bentley and Rolls. It’s too bad they can’t be independent once again. It’s unfortunate that they have been defiled by Ford and sadly likely will be defiled by someone else not worth of owning such marquees. I must agree with CTS. Jaguar and Land Rover need to be restored to Great Britain. I just think the rest of the world (at least the GM and Cadillac people) aren’t worthy of such fine automobiles and utility vehicles. They must feel out classed.

In case nobody reads, European car makers are begging for the emission rules to be relaxed as they can’t make clean air come out the tailpipe.

For eco-freaks—no running car makes clean air, even electic cars need to get power from SOMEWHERE…and don’t forget your airplane ride spewing air pollution.

Sorry for Jaguar and Land Rover, the last survivors of the British Empire which shrunk to an island, and now almost out of business.

wonder if this has something to do with ford not wanting to retain a small stake in them?

CTS & Jag, the famous Premiership league does not belong to brits anymore: Chelsea is in Russian hands, Arsenal partially Russian, Manchester United owned by American investor and I believe Liverpool has foreign equity in it. There is not a single car manufacturer that is owned by brits, however I just read report that 1.5 million cars are produced in England: twice as much as few years back. Maybe it is not bad idea for foreigners to own British labour relationships problems.
