More than 1,900 Chrysler and General Motors dealers have found themselves without product to sell, but that could all change if Malcolm Bricklin has his way. Bricklin, an automotive tycoon best known for being the first to import Subaru and Yugo vehicles to America, has revealed a plan to sell ‘hydrogen-hybrid’ cars at unwanted Chrysler and GM dealers.
Under the Visionary Vehicles banner, Bricklin would sell up to 300,000 vehicles per year. Those vehicles would be sourced from Chrysler and GM, but would see an interior upgrade “from standard to luxuryâ€, according to the Boston Herald.
Additionally, Visionary Vehicles would equip its cars with a revolutionary hydrogen-hybrid drivetrain. Although specific details on the system remain scarce, the system would use an on-board “electrolyser†to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Those gases would then be injected to the car’s air intake, thereby reducing overall fuel consumption. Overall, it sounds very similar to the system used in Ronn Motor Company’s Scorpion.
Bricklin says the system could net “100 percent better mileageâ€.
Bricklin’s Visionary Vehicles plan also calls for the purchase of at least two unused factories. These facilities would be used for interior upgrades as well as the instillation of the hydrogen-hybrid system.
Despite the promise of such a system, Visionary Vehicles is just a proposal at this point. Bricklin has yet to run the idea by any investors but says he plans to do so when he completes the first working prototype in three months.
