A man facing a big bill because he had blown the engine in his 1997 BMW decided to bury his car instead and collect $20,000 from his insurance company by claiming it was stolen, reports the Associated Press. Mueller, 35, of Akron, was sentenced to a year in prison for insurance fraud, tampering with evidence, falsification and receiving stolen property. He also had to pay restitution to Progressive Insurance along with $15,500 to state officials for their costs digging up the car.

What I want to know is how obvious his scam was that they thought to check if the car was burried. I mean, if I heard that someones car was stolen I certainly wouldn’t jump to that conclusion! Also – think about *HOW MUCH WORK* it would be to do that? Wow…

I suppose they found out because somehow the car must’ve gone from the location where he blew the engine to where he burried it. Either he used a service or did it himself, but I can image my neighbour going ‘What the hell did you do your car?’
