March, first quarter sales slump for Big 3, Toyota

04/01/2008, 4:34 PM

By paulee

March has seen U.S. vehicle sales declines from the Detroit big three that are Chrysler, Ford and GM as well as the giant from Japan that is Toyota, no doubt a result of rising fuel prices and an economy that seems to be on a crash course. It was GM’s worst March since it kept records, with a decline of 18.7 percent from the same time last year, while Ford’s sales declined by 14.1. Chrysler took the cake with a 19.4 percent decline, though company representatives attribute at least some of that to slowing fleet sales in an attempt to keep resale prices up. Toyota sold only 10.3 percent less vehicles than it did in March of 2007. Truck sales dropped more, as a percentage, than cars, suggesting higher fuel prices are taking their toll on gas-guzzlers.

Toyota also fared best of the four in terms of lowest declines in the first quarter of 2008. Toyota vehicle sales, including Scion and Lexus, fell 5.6 percent in the first quarter of 2008. The Camry and Prius did post record March sales numbers.

GM is down 10.9 percent thus far in year-to-year numbers, but executive promises the company will move what it originally estimated for 2008: an estimated 15.3 million vehicles thanks to “stimulus” packages.

Chrysler sales in Q1 fell by 15.5 percent, with a 22 percent decline in truck sales responsible for that, as car sales actually increased in the three-month period by 4 percent. Traditionally, Chrysler sells nearly three times as many trucks as cars, as numbers include the Jeep and Dodge brands, both line-ups of which are truck-heavy.

Ford sales fell 9.0 percent compared to Q1 in 2007, largely due to slowing truck sales. In March, the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the Blue Oval line-up, including the Escape crossover small SUV, were the only ones which sold more than last year. Ford fears the worst is still ahead, according to Automotive News.

True media bias. Look at your own words,”It was GM’s worst March since it kept records, with a decline of 11.4 percent from the same time last year”"Toyota sold only 10.3 percent less vehicles than it did in March of 2007″
What is the differece between the two quotes.
Why don’t you just pull down thier pants and kiss Toyota where you do all the time.
Why does the media hate America?

I agree. I have nothing against imports but the media language is always bias. I remember a LLN article on hybrids. The first news was an article about fuel saving that hybrids offer, and a Prius was shown. Lather the same day there was an article about hybrid sales down and this time an Escape hybrid was shown. This is the USA guys, give Detroit a break. Have you ever hear a German or Japanese call their vehicles crap?

Meanwhile, Honda is +6.9 for the month, +2.8 for the year
However, Acura is -15.8 for the month, -12.9 for the year
Overall, HMC is +4.2 for the month, +0.9 for the year

Unless Acura rediscovers its reason for existence, it will continue to drag Honda’s numbers down. Maybe it’s time to consider shutting it down and consolidating under Honda, just like the rest of the world

Of course they’re down this year, even big rig truckers are feeling the pinch. The question is: what is the Government going to do about these ridiculous oil prices? Knowing this administration’s policy, absolutely NOTHING! Hopefully the next President will put a lot more effort into domestic issues like our bleeding economy etc.

Toyota is shown as “doing the best”, but yet Nissan’s and Honda’s numbers weren’t reported.

Toyota’s sales fell less and 1% less than GM’s declines for March, yet this article makes it sound like GM is on the ropes and Toyota can shrug their nearly double-digit declines off.

Oh, and the author meant “collision course”, not “crash course”. The former means “on the course to a collision”, and the latter means, “an expedient lesson”.

1c3d0g, the government and it applies to ANY government can’t regulate supply and demand. We the PEOPLE can. If we will start buying smaller. lighter cars that consume less fuel with continuous supply the cost will go down. In the past this formula worked well: why do you think cars of late 80’s were so small compare to todays? Original mini van was a mini van with choice of 2 four cylinder engines: 2.2 & 2.6L. And it was not in Europe but here in US. This time around situation is a bot worse: add prosperity in China and India along of other more developed Asian countries and you have a lot of people who want to drive.

FYI: Honda lost 3 point in March, Nissan a bit more, but both did better then toyota.

As already stated, this article is not a shock. With what money are the american people suppose to buy cars? Prices on most products continue to climb, and those of us who are still fortunate enough to have a job aren’t getting paid anymore to compensate. I don’t see this trend stopping anytime in the near future unfortunately.

Interesting that Chrysler’s numbers were dragged down by Jeep/truck sales and the cars actually posted increased sales. That’s remarkable, since all of Chrylser’s car offerings are **** (the 300 is getting really old), and the Wranglers are selling like hotcakes. I wonder how accurate this info really is.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better guys. My mutual funds are the ****s, my company stock is the ****s, and inflation (housing, food, gas, etc.) is going from bearable to plain stupid. The world economy is still driven by the US (I think it’s in transition) and everybody’s investing in real commodities (metals, land, oil, food, etc.). Wait until this hits the grocery stores and people can’t buy cars cause they need to buy food, pay the rent, heat the house – remember land is going up, it costs more for the farmer to run his equipment, buy his equipment, etc. Everything runs on cheap oil and when it’s not cheap anymore, everything gets more expensive. Oil price increase is a reflection of nervous investors.

No wonder nobody is buying trucks, 4×4 wranglers, or other toys – they just need something to provide basic transportation. I need a truck but at $1.15 CAD per litre in Alberta and climbing – not sure I want to buy one.

One thing the government could do is reform existing fuel efficiency and safety regulation. As they are currently written, they tend to conflict with each other. Something else to consider is establishing a common standard with the European Union. This would greatly reduce production costs, increase available options, and create competition for consumers. From a Capitalistic perspective these are all good things. I should be able to import a Peugeot 206 with minimal government red tape. Likewise, European farmers may be interested in Ford F-150s

What Acura needs:
- Resurrect the RSX/Integra, a three-door $20K sports car with great fuel economy.
- Give buyers a reason to look at the TL and TSX versus the new Accord. I don’t think the redesigned TL and TSX will be enough. The ‘problem’ is the new Accord is too good
- A TSX Sportswagon based on the Euro Accord wagon. This will fill the gap between their sedans and SUV/crossovers.
- A V10 RL instead of a bloated TL
- THE NSX. Keep the engine where it belongs: behind the passengers

I think this news is stating the obvious. America’s economy is in the crapper right now. The current administration (led by a Harvard MBA, no less) has no idea how to get out of this quagmire of an economic crisis and still fund a war that has spilled the blood of 10,000s of soldiers (goodness knows how many of the ‘other’ side has been spilled).

Guess it’s a great time to buy a car if you can afford one. I’m sure dealerships will make concessions on profit if it can get cars off the lots. (I for one will be doing so in the next month … guess with the money saved, I can buy mods …)
