Maserati makes first profit in 17 years

07/24/2007, 10:20 AM

By Andrew Ganz

You can tell things are looking up for the Italian auto industry (also known as Fiat S.p.A.): not only did Fiat make a record profit in the second quarter of 2007, but Maserati had its first profitable quarter in 17 years.

Maserati became part of the Fiat Group in 1990 and it hasn’t made a profit since. But the company announced today that it made a €1 million trading profit, well up from the €7 million loss in the second quarter of last year. Maserati broke even in the first quarter of ‘07, a massive change from its €26 million loss in the same period.

Maserati expects to be even more profitable through the rest of the year. The new Granturismo coupe goes in sale later this month in Italy and Maserati has seen a 40 percent increase in sales of its Quattroporte sedan since the introduction of the Automatica automatic transmission model for this model year.

Well, at least they listen to their customers. The biggest problem with the QP was the gearbox, and clients complained, so they replaced it and voila! Sales increased. Now, if only the American auto industry could learn from Maserati and follow suit…

They make some nice rides. My only qualm is the interiors look like something that came off a boat, the white pipping, and bright colors. Its very marine.

How can a company not make a profit for 17 YEARS and still exist? Maybe this will give GM and Ford some hope…

If Ford made a car as fugly as the Quattroporte you all would laugh and say “typical American ****.”

Jag should be reading the Maserati playbook. Jag should’ve been Aston-lite.

As long as Maserati can maintain that Ferrari-lite image, they could go really far. The Quattroporte is an amazing vehicle and the GrandTourismo looks poised to impress too.

I would add that the GTs are depreciating like crazy and might make for a heck of a good used purchase. I just don’t know how reliable they are or where to fix one in Indianapolis.

I’m not suprised Maserati hasn’t made profit in a long time… some of their designs in the 80’s and 90’s were horrible. Their most recent designs are pretty good looking, especially the GT.

In some respects the Quattroporte is a really good looking car.

And I agree Angelo, Jaguar should be reading the Maserati playbook. Jaguar’s been making some good moves as of lately too though.

I used to drive a friend’s dad’s Biturbo Sypder. I was 18 years old and it made for a kick booty summer. Loved that car, felt big money for the first time in my life.

Burmanesski – luckily for you, Henry Ford didn’t use up all the black paint on his Model T’s.. Maserati is sure to have some left over for your ride!
