Maserati popularity builds in North America

09/06/2006, 12:07 PM

By admin

Maserati North America today reported that is has sold 499 GranSport and GranSport Spyder units this year, up from 388 the year before. The increase in August sales was even larger, with a 47 percent jump in sales. Overall sales are expected to be close to last year’s figure of 2,100, as Modena factory is running near capacity. Maserati says the popular Quattroporte sedan now commands a 40 percent market share in the $100,000 to $150,000 sedan segment. Maserati is also hoping uncertainty and Jaguar and Aston Martin can help send sales its way. “In times of ownership uncertainty for companies like Jaguar and Aston Martin, Maserati with it strong Ferrari connection and sound ownership at Fiat becomes the obvious choice for those making an investment in a $100,000 plus car,” the company said in a statement.

The Quattroporte is a bargain for what you get. I recomend it to all my clients that are looking at sedans in that price range.

Maseratis are about as beautiful as a semi mass-produced vehicle can be. I’m glad they’re having the sales success: they deserve it. While the S-Class and 7-series are superior in some ways, I’d take the Maser any day just for its beauty.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have to make that decision.

I’m not sure i’d recommend a Quattroporte in Colorado, they don’t seem the most sturdy of motor cars

I had the fortune of seeing a few Maserati Gransport, and Coupes. I think they look beautiful from every angle but the back. The back looks like it was lifted off a cheap Japanese car. It was so incongruous, that I lost some fascination for this brand. I still hope they do well, however.

They use to have a “boomerang†rear-light theme, but apparently it didn’t sit well with the American public, so they changed it to the current ‘blob’ design you see now. WTF are the Italians doing listening to Americans about car design?

Early this year I read that GM was closing the plant that produces the Buick Terraza. At the time I was not familiar with the Terraza and soon discovered it was a minivan. The following day I spotted two Maserati Quattroportes two blocks apart from each other in downtown Chicago. At that point I decided to count Quattroportes versus Terrazas. I quit counting once I reached fifty Maseratis and only thirty Buicks! I should note that I spotted the Quattroportes not only in Chicago but in the suburbs and in neighboring states; therefore, I was not counting the same cars over and over again. Truly amazing when an exotic outsells an ordinary vehicle. I guess this indicates the depth of problems GM is facing.

if the common perception is that buicks are “ordinary vehicles” gm really should be worrying. Can’t wait for those alfas to arrive

The Maserati Coupe is one of the most gorgeous of autos. They sound better than they look.

I liked the fact that they were not popular.

Come on. The Maser Coupe is not beautiful. I wish it was but it’s not.

It’s a tad too tall, a tad too thin, to betruly great looking.
The front grill is beautiful but the front light lenses ruin it by being ho-hum.
The rear end is a complete downer – it looks like a Honda.
The dash is for dainty designers, not car aficionados.

Maybe they will get it right in the re-design.

I think it’s beautiful, but I can’t help to notice that the back ends of the Maseratis look painfully similar to the back of a Ford Fusion…

I’ll second what JJS says. I frequent the Chicago area (River North, the wealthiest area) and frequently see Quattoportes outnumber S classes and 7 series 2 to 1.

Great transmission, interior, design, I just wish they were faster.

Daniel, I don’t know what Maserati’s you’re looking at, but neither the Coupe, Spyder, Gransport or Quattroporte look anything like a Ford Fusion. Don’t insult Maserati by even attempting to compare the two.

I know it’s just my opinion, so I won’t argue lol. But pull up some pictures of the rear ends of a Quattroporte for instance. I highly doubt anyone could mistake the two, but the rear lights are pretty similar. Just my thoughts, it’s obviously far more superior than the Ford lol

Fusion doesn’t look much like any Maserati’s in my opinion. But you know what they say about opinions ;)

Maseratis do sound great. They should with that sweet ass Ferrari V8 under the hood.

I’m surprised by the number of Quattroportes I seen on the road. I was driving out in BFE one day and what do I happen upon at the only traffic light for 30 miles in any direction? A white Quattroporte! Wierd!

Beautiful cars.

+1 on the can’t wait for Alfa to arrive list

The Maserati Quattroporte needs a V-12 with 500 plus hp to make it perfect. The Maserati Coupe/Convertible is aging nicely. Not bad for a design which is sold for a very long time. Better wait fot the Quattroporte coupe with the folding metal top. That should give MB SL’s some nightmares.

I had the chance to see the Quattroporte next to a S500 and a Maybach last week. I must say the style impressed me more than the other 2. It’s certainly far more exclusive in the mind of the general public. The quality is probably worse than the others though. If I’m shopping for a large sedan around that price it’d be the first on my list.
