Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S [Live image update]

01/12/2009, 3:04 PM

By Drew Johnson

In honor of the 70th anniversary of Maserati’s first Indianapolis 500 win, the automaker has unveiled a special edition of the Quattroporte sedan at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Quattroporte Sport GT S sees an upgrade to 433 horsepower, a tuned suspension, a sports exhaust and styling modifications.

Maserati says that remapping the engine delivers 433 horsepower, an upgrade of 8 horsepower over the 425-horse Quattroporte S. The transmission software has been reprogrammed to allow for faster shifts, as well. To make it handle the power bump, Maserati has stiffened the springs and lowered the ride height and, to provide what Maserati calls a “deep, throaty sound,” the GT S features a sports-exhaust.

Outside, the Quattroporte GT S gets red accents, new headlamps in a metallic titanium finish and shadow-line finishing. GT S buyers are treated to new Alcantara and leather-covered seats an titanium-colored Titanex composite trim inside.

Several nice tweaks to the weak points of the exterior. The previous tail lights (non-LED) and headlights were out of place on a $110k+ vehicle. They have fixed those problems. The grille is also nicely repeated on the “M-design” seats. Good attention to detail and continuity.

However, 433HP works on a 3500 lb car. At this price point, 433HP is underpowered on a 4400 lb car. Also, some of the plastic on the consol and switch-gear is way too down-market. It’s a great car, but those faults need to be addressed.

I’m sorry, but I’m of the minority opinion that Quattroporte’s are hideous.

It’s strange, there is not many cars that I actually dislike the look of….but this car just looks like an old mans car…..I guess if you look at it that way it is a nice old mans car. The only thing actually “beautiful” about this car is the front. I just don’t understand all these extremely positive responses
