DaimlerChrysler’s efforts to create a new super-luxury brand yielded the return of the long dead Maybach nameplate and high hopes. As if Daimler needed another headache besides the ongoing Chrysler drama, its got one in Maybach. It’s not the brand, one executive told Automobile Magazine, its the product.
“Everyone involved knows now that it’s not the brand that’s at fault,” claims the company source. “It’s the current product in general and the design in particular.” The executive said the boldly designed Exelero concept “did more for us than all the tweaks to the 57/62 series combined,” suggesting aggressive designs could save the brand.
The super-luxury brand hasn’t met sales expectations and is looking to a rebadged Mercedes GL-Class as its potential savior in the short term. Ultimately the brand would like to develop a high-end four-door coupe, based off the S-Class platform. The CLS-like vehicle would be longer, wider, more luxurious, and obviously much more expensive than the Mercedes coupe.
The uber-CLS would feature exterior lighting to highlight certain body contours, a variable-tint glass roof, and an LCD gauge cluster that changes based on conditions.

Build the Exelero already. I know Jay-Z will buy at least one. He mentions it in every other song. And if he buys it, you know it’ll sell.

A4 I couldn’t agree more. When will DCX get their priorities straight? Selling big-ass expensive cars to nouveau-riche assbags will not bring in the money that large-volume production can (economies of scale, anyone?)…if DCX even pretended to care about fixing Chrysler instead of selling it off.

Maybach’s aren’t selling because they got screwed when the latest generation S-class came out and looked almost the same. Now when the evidence points to potential buyers not wanting the cars to be linked to lesser Mercedes the company thinks that rebadging Mercs is the way forward. Does anyone else see the flaw here?
Not that it matters anyway, the whole Maybach thing is so small in the Mercedes portfolio as to be almost irrelevant and even if it loses on every car it won’t hurt Merc any more than Bugatti hurts VW.

Maybach sucks a little too much with that sedan. They should kill that and make the Exelero only. And after that, just stop.

The problem with the current Maybach sedans is that it looks too similar to lower priced Mercedes S class of the last generation. With the launch of the redesigned new S Class, Maybach sales will be pinched even more. All that extra luxury features will not save the brand.

The Maybach are amazing cars but the reason there not selling is not that many people have personal drivers now a days. The 62 is a car to be driven in, The Rolls-Royce Phantom is a car to drive yourself in.

@Mr.AMG: no rolls will ever be a care to drive, that’s Bentley. They need to take a look at Aston, because they aren’t selling more cars than ever due to their super lux features. They’re selling cars because the cars they build now are bloody gorgeous. Good design can make up for a whole hell of a lot.

I have no clue on this one as I’ll probably never be able to afford one! When it gets to this price range it better be different because everyone will already have V12s, leather, blah blah blah. It has to stand out or have a good following like Cadillac.

Yes, aggressive designs are the only way forward. That did it for Cadillac, BMW and a bunch of other manufacturers. Now if only Ford would have the balls to do it…

Everyone is pretty much saying the same things, and I agree wholeheartedly.. but is DCX listening? Rebadges and shared platforms with lesser MB models are a complete NO-NO for buyers in this echelon, and the fact that the 57S and 62S styling still looks like the S-class of two generations ago doesn’t help one bit. The naming convention is also screwy.. doesn’t a Mercedes S65 AMG sound like a nicer, more expensive car than a Maybach 62S, just in name only?
DCX needs to observe what Bentley, R-R and A-M are doing and create a new line of distinctively styled and appointed Maybach sedans AND coupes, and drop the alphanumeric names that sound inferior to those of M-B.. how about Exelero, Echelon, Criterion, etc.?? Otherwise, there isn’t much point in keeping the brand around.

I personally dont believe there is a market out there substantial enough for a Maybach. They may sell a couple hundred cars but who’ll buy the Exelero for the price of a Veyron? If you got the cash and the opportunity to blow it on a ride, believe me, it’ll be the Veyron.

S-Class is not the reason the MAYBACH is not doing well in the marketplace. MAYBACH was introduced several years before the new S-Class, and had been doing awfully since the MAYBACH introduction.
MAYBACH problems start a little with it’s History or Lack of to those it was marketed too. And the biggest problem was it’s price, actually both ROLLS & MAYBACH had slow starts in the marketplace. The only success has been BENTLY.
VW for all of it’s stumbles got BENTLY right. Right Design & especially Right Price.
