Mazda has officially begun production of its all-new Mazda6 at the company's Hofu Plant No. 2 in Japan's Yamaguchi prefecture. Unveiled in picture form last month, the new Mazda6 will make its first public appearance at the Moscow International Automobile Salon later this month.

Mazda marked the start of production with a celebration drawing more than 500 people, including company CEO Takashi Yamanouchi. There was also a surprise guess in attendance - the wagon variant of the new 6, which was previously unseen.

"That first Mazda6 debuted as an embodiment of Mazda's brand message, Zoom-Zoom, and its success led to great improvement in our brand image," Yamanouchi said. "The new Mazda6 that starts rolling off the line today features both SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO - Soul of Motion design. Its development represents the very best of our engineering capability and our uncompromising attention to detail."

Mazda will launch the 2014 Mazda6 in Europe and Japan by year's end, with U.S. sales of the car slated to begin in early 2013. Mazda has yet to comment if the wagon variant of the 6 will be sold on these shores, but it appears unlikely at this point.
